Gold engagement rings are advertised with two numbers that do not measure the same thing: the price of a finished ring, and the price of a setting you still have to put a diamond into. Of the five picks below, read on each seller’s own site on 20 September 2026, three are complete rings with their stone stated and two are settings priced before any stone, and the gap between those two kinds of figure is wider than the gap between karats. Our overall pick is Angara’s Knife-Edged Classic Round Diamond Solitaire, which opened under $900 in 18K yellow gold with a natural G, VS2 diamond of 3.4mm printed on the page.

Key Takeaways
- Two of our five picks are settings, not rings: the With Clarity pages ask you to choose your diamond and complete your ring after the price you see.
- On one setting we could price metal by metal, the figure ran $558 to $963 as the metal moved from 14KT gold to platinum, read on 20 September 2026.
- Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, the bare word gold means fine 24 karat gold, so a lower alloy must carry its karat immediately before the word in equally conspicuous type (16 CFR 23.3(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- Total Materia (2009) gives 18K as 75% pure gold, 14K as 58.3% and 10K as 41.7%, and GIA (2025) writes that 24k is the purest and softest, making it more prone to scratches and dents.
- No source we opened ranks karats for how well prongs hold a stone, so treat any seller that does as giving an opinion rather than a measurement.

Read the stone column before the price column. Three of these figures buy a ring with a diamond in it and two buy the gold around a diamond you have not chosen yet. Prices are as each page opened on 20 September 2026, in US dollars.

Angara Knife-Edged Classic Round Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring
by Angara
Best for: A complete gold ring with a natural stone, at a price that is the whole ring rather than the setting.
Solid 18K yellow gold with a natural diamond, and the listing prints the karat, the stone grade and the stone size before you add anything.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- The page opened at a stated G, VS2 diamond of 3.4mm in 18K yellow gold, so the figure is the finished ring
- 18K is the higher of the two karats most US engagement rings use, at a price under many 14K settings sold without a stone

- $863 as the page opened
- Material

- Price range
- $558 to $963, setting only

Best lab-grown stone in gold
Angara Lab-Grown Round Diamond Tapered Cathedral Solitaire Engagement Ring
by Angara
Best for: A bigger stone for the money in a gold setting, with the origin stated in the title.
Solid 14K yellow gold with a lab-grown diamond, named as lab-grown in the product title itself.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- The words lab-grown sit in the product name, which is the disclosure the FTC jewelry guides expect
- A complete ring price rather than a setting price, read on 20 September 2026
- 14K yellow gold, the karat most US retailers default to for daily wear
Keep in mind
- One karat and one color on this listing, so there is no metal comparison to make here
- The opening price reflects the opening stone configuration, not the one you may end up choosing
- Returns are refused on a ring another jeweler has repaired, resized or engraved
- Price range
- $1,052 as the page opened
- Material
- Solid 14K yellow gold
- Widths
- Not published for this design
- Sizes
- Chosen on the listing
- Guarantee
- 30 days from delivery, two free return labels per order; the lifetime warranty covers re-polishing, stone tightening, rhodium re-plating and one free resizing in the first year
Best white gold
Angara Lab-Grown Classic Round Diamond Solitaire Bypass Engagement Ring
by Angara
Best for: White gold from a seller whose warranty says in writing that it re-plates.
Solid 14K white gold, which is a gold alloy under rhodium plating rather than a naturally white metal.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- The warranty lists rhodium re-plating as a covered service, which is the upkeep white gold actually needs
- A lab-grown stone named as lab-grown in the title, in a complete ring price
- A bypass shank, which is an alternative to a plain solitaire band at the same karat
Keep in mind
- The most expensive opening price among our picks
- White gold's brightness is a rhodium coating, so the finish is a maintenance item from day one
- GIA notes people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with it, and the alloy is not published here
- Price range
- $1,799 as the page opened
- Material
- Solid 14K white gold
- Widths
- Not published for this design
- Sizes
- Chosen on the listing
- Guarantee
- 30 days from delivery, two free return labels per order; the lifetime warranty covers re-polishing, stone tightening, rhodium re-plating and one free resizing in the first year
How We Chose
- Every listing opened on the seller’s own site on 20 September 2026, with prices in US dollars as the page showed them.
- Setting prices labeled as setting prices, because a setting figure and a finished ring figure are not comparable when only one of them has a diamond in it.
- One design priced across karats wherever it existed, which is the only way to read what a karat costs without changing the design.
- The karat and the stone’s origin taken from the listing, never inferred from a photograph.
- Return, resizing and warranty terms quoted from each seller’s own page, with anything we could not find written as not stated.
- No star ratings, no review counts and nothing about how a ring wears, because we did not buy or wear these rings.
Setting Price or Ring Price: The First Thing to Check
Every organic result on the first page for this search on 20 September 2026 was a shop, and shop cards show a photograph, a name and a number. What that number covers is decided one click deeper, and the two models sit side by side in this category without either being flagged in the search result.
Angara’s pages price a finished ring: $863 to $1,052 covered our two Angara picks, each with its stone named on the page, a natural G, VS2 diamond of 3.4mm on the knife-edged solitaire and a lab-grown stone on the cathedral. With Clarity’s pages price a setting: the page showing the lowest figure on this article also carries the instructions to choose your diamond and to complete your ring. Neither model is dishonest, and the setting model is what lets you put a lab-grown or a natural stone in the same mount. But a buyer comparing a setting against a finished ring across two tabs is not comparing two rings.
The practical check takes a second. If the page offers a stone shape but never a carat weight, a color or a clarity grade, you are looking at a setting. If it names a grade, as Angara’s does, the figure is the ring. What each of those grades adds to the price, natural and lab-grown, is laid out in our best diamond engagement rings.
Solid Gold, Plated or Filled on an Engagement Ring
The FTC’s marking rule for gold applies to a ring with a stone in it exactly as it does to a plain band, and it matters more here, because an engagement ring is worn every day for decades and the metal doing the hardest work is the thinnest part of it.
What the Word Gold Promises on Its Own
Section 23.3(b)(1) of the FTC Jewelry Guides calls it misleading to use the word gold without qualification for anything not composed throughout of fine (24 karat) gold, and (b)(2) requires a correct karat designation immediately before the word, in type of at least equal conspicuousness. Every pick on this page carries that number: 14K, 14KT, 18K. A ring described only as a gold engagement ring, with no karat anywhere on the page, has not met the standard the guides set out.
Plated and Filled Are Not the Same Category
Section 23.3(c)(2) allows gold plate, gold overlay or rolled gold plate when a mechanically applied plating of at least 10 karat fineness makes up one fortieth of the article’s metal weight, and reserves gold filled for a plating of one twentieth, twice as much. Electroplating has a separate floor again: at least 10 karat fineness and a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold. None of our picks is plated, and on an engagement ring that is the point. Plating wears fastest where metal rubs, and on a stone-set ring that is the prongs and the underside of the shank.
The Word Solid, and the Word Hollow
The note to section 23.3(c)(1) says a gold alloy product with a hollow center should not be marked or described as solid, and offers 14 Kt. Solid Gold on such a piece as an example of what not to write. If a wide gold shank is priced well below everything else you have looked at, ask for the gram weight before you assume it is a bargain.
What Nobody Publishes
We looked for a published comparison of how well prongs in 10K, 14K and 18K hold a stone, and found none from GIA, the FTC or any standards body. GIA (2025) goes as far as saying 14k and 18k gold, alloyed with other metals for increased strength, are more suitable for everyday wear, and that higher karat gold such as 24k is the purest and softest, making it more prone to scratches and dents. That is about the metal, not about prongs, and we are not going to extend it into a claim nobody has measured. What our guide to engagement ring settings sets out instead is what GIA does publish about each setting style.
Choosing a Karat for an Engagement Ring
Karat counts parts in 24, and the rest is alloy. Our guides to 10K vs 14K gold and 14K vs 18K gold carry the full treatment, including the legal minimum question and the published hardness measurements.
10K, 14K and 18K
Total Materia (2009) gives the fractions: 18K is 75% pure gold, 14K is 58.3% and 10K is 41.7%. More gold means richer color and a softer alloy; more alloy means a harder ring and a paler yellow. US engagement rings cluster at 14K and 18K, which is where both of our sellers sit, and 10K appears far more often on wedding bands than on engagement rings.
What a Karat Costs on the Same Setting
Because With Clarity prices one setting across every metal, the premium is readable rather than inferred.
| Setting, round, read 20 September 2026 | Price across the metals offered | What each step up costs |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Four Prong Petite Comfort Fit Solitaire | $558 to $963, 14KT to platinum | 48% more for 18KT, 73% more for platinum |
| Tulip Basket Cathedral Classic Solitaire | $590 to $1,110, 14KT to platinum | 63% more for 18KT, 88% more for platinum |
Two readings. The move from 14KT to 18KT is a steeper step here than we measured on plain bands, because a setting holds less metal and the fixed costs of making it weigh more in the total. And platinum sat only about a sixth above 18KT on both, a much smaller gap than the way platinum is usually described.
24K and Why It Is Not an Engagement Ring Metal in the US
Twenty four karat is the only gold the FTC lets a seller call gold with no qualifier, and GIA’s line about purity and softness is the whole reason it does not appear in this category. A setting has to grip a stone for decades. None of the sellers we opened offers 24K, and the related searches that ask for it are, in practice, asking for the deepest yellow rather than for 24 parts in 24. The closest practical stop is 18K.
Yellow, White or Rose Gold for a Ring You Will Wear Daily
Color is an alloy decision, with one exception that is really a coating decision.

Yellow Gold
Yellow gold is alloyed to stay yellow, so there is nothing covering it and nothing to renew. Three of our five picks open in yellow, and it is the color the shop pages ranking for this search led with on 20 September 2026.
White Gold and the Rhodium on Top of It
White gold is not naturally white. GIA (2015) describes it as gold alloyed with nickel or palladium, copper and zinc, typically 14K at 583 parts pure gold or 18K at 750, and states that the rhodium plating will wear away gradually over time, requiring the ring to be replated occasionally. On an engagement ring that is a recurring appointment, not a one-off. Our white gold pick comes from the one seller here whose lifetime warranty names rhodium re-plating as a covered service. For the full comparison see white gold vs yellow gold and, against the other white metal, platinum or white gold.
Rose Gold
Rose gold takes its color from a higher proportion of copper in the alloy, and our rose gold vs yellow gold guide publishes the composition. Both With Clarity settings offer it at the same price as yellow and white in the same karat, so the color costs nothing extra on those listings.
Nickel and Sensitive Skin
GIA writes that people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with this metal, and none of the white gold listings we opened named the whitening metal in its alloy. Ask before you order. Our guide to hypoallergenic engagement rings covers what to ask for.
Gold vs Platinum for an Engagement Ring
The two white metals do the same job differently: platinum is white all the way through and gold is white only under rhodium. On the two settings we could price in both, platinum cost about a sixth more than 18KT gold, a smaller premium than its reputation suggests. Weight, patina and the re-plating schedule are compared in full in our platinum or white gold guide, and where gold sits against tungsten, titanium and ceramic is in how gold compares to other metals.
Which Gold Engagement Ring Should You Choose?
Work down the left column until a row matches you. Every row traces to a listing we opened or to the FTC and GIA text quoted above.
| Your situation | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want one price that covers the whole ring | A seller that names the stone grade and size | Angara’s knife-edged solitaire opened under $900 with a G, VS2 stone stated |
| You want to choose the diamond yourself | A setting, priced as a setting | With Clarity’s pages ask you to choose your diamond and complete your ring |
| You want the deepest yellow | 18K rather than 14K | 75% gold against 58.3%, per Total Materia |
| You want the harder alloy for daily wear | 14K | More alloy metal, and GIA ties alloying to increased strength |
| You want a bigger stone for the money | A lab-grown diamond, labeled as one | Named in the title on both Angara lab picks, which is the disclosure the guides expect |
| You want white and dislike maintenance | Platinum rather than white gold | GIA: rhodium plating wears away and the ring needs replating occasionally |
| You react to jewelry | Yellow or rose gold, and ask for the alloy in writing | GIA: avoid white gold alloyed with nickel if you are allergic to it |
| You expect to resize | A seller whose resizing terms are published | Angara names one free resizing in the first year; both sellers void returns on outside work |
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Average Price for a Gold Engagement Ring?
No trade body publishes an average for gold specifically. On the listings we read on 20 September 2026, complete rings ran $863 to $1,799, and bare settings $558 to $1,110 before any diamond was added. What couples spend overall, from a named and dated survey, is in our guide to average engagement ring cost.
What Gold Is Best for an Engagement Ring?
No authority we read names a best. GIA suits 14k and 18k to everyday wear because they are alloyed for strength, which is where both of our sellers sit. Yellow needs no plating, white needs periodic rhodium, rose costs the same as either in the listings we opened. Pick the color first, then the karat.
Is 14k or 18K Gold Better for a Ring?
Neither is better outright. 18K holds more gold and less alloy metal, so it is deeper in color and softer, and it cost roughly half again as much on the two settings we could price in both karats. 14K is harder and cheaper. On a ring worn every day, that hardness is the argument for 14K.
What Are Some Good Gold Engagement Rings Under $500?
None of our picks opened under $500. The cheapest figure on this page is a bare 14KT gold setting just under $600, and it still needs a diamond. Under $500 in solid gold, expect either a very small stone or a plated ring, and check the listing for a karat mark before anything else. Our affordable engagement rings page covers that end.
Is a $1000 Dollar Engagement Ring Cheap?
It is below the middle of what we read here, not at the bottom. A thousand dollars buys a complete gold ring with a lab-grown stone from one of our picks, or a gold setting plus a modest diamond from the other seller. Whether that is cheap depends entirely on the stone, which is where most of the money goes.
What Are the Best Brands for Gold Rings?
We found no published, independent ranking of jewelry brands, so nobody can answer this with a measurement. What can be compared is what each seller puts in writing: the karat, the stone grade, the return window and whether resizing is free. Our Angara review and With Clarity review read those terms seller by seller.
