Unique Engagement Rings: 5 Non-Traditional Styles, and What Each Costs

Unique engagement rings are rarely unique because of what they cost. What sets one apart is the setting, the stone or the way the stones are arranged: two stones instead of one, prongs shaped like petals, a band that twists like a vine, an oval turned on its side, or a flash of color beside the diamond. Below are five of those non-traditional styles, with one example of each that we priced on 27 September 2026, from 800 dollars for a finished toi et moi to 1,530 dollars for a vine ring with green tsavorites. All five come from Rare Carat, so read this as five styles with one ring you can buy in each, not a ranking of every jeweler.

The Best Unique Engagement Rings, Reviewed

Best overall

Rare Carat Toi et Moi Oval and Pear Lab Ring (1.00 ct. tw.)

by Rare Carat

Best for: A buyer who wants the most recognizable non-traditional style, finished and set, for under a thousand dollars.

The two stones sit side by side on a 1.5mm band, and it is the only pick here that arrives as a finished ring for under a thousand dollars.

What we like

  • A complete ring with both lab diamonds set, not a setting that still needs a stone
  • The listing states the grades, F color and VS2 clarity, and the total weight of 1 carat
  • The lowest price of the five picks as a finished ring

Keep in mind

  • The page gives the total weight, not how the carat is split between the two stones
  • No matching band is offered on the page, and two stones side by side leave an uneven gap beside a straight band
  • A resize ends the right to return it, so the size has to be settled first
Price range

Best vine setting

Rare Carat Vionne Vine Engagement Ring With 1 Carat Round Lab Diamond

by Rare Carat

Best for: A buyer who wants a nature-inspired ring with a classic round center stone and a band made to match it.

Rare Carat describes "twisting vine motifs with pavé accents" around the center diamond, and it offers a matching Vionne Winding Band at $980.

What we like

  • Priced as a finished ring with the center diamond and its grades stated
  • A matching band is sold for it, which answers the fit question a twisting shank raises
  • The setting can take any diamond shape, per the listing

Keep in mind

  • The six side diamonds are small, 0.04 carat in total, and graded SI1, G-H
  • The price shown depends on the diamond picked with it; a different stone changes the total
  • The most expensive complete ring here after the tsavorite pick
Price range
$1,495 complete: $1,100 for the setting and $395 for the 1 ct lab diamond, 14K white gold (checked 2026-09-27)

Best tulip setting

Rare Carat Marigold Tulip Inspired 6 Prong Lab Engagement Ring With 1 Carat Round Lab Diamond

by Rare Carat

Best for: A buyer who wants a solitaire that looks different up close while staying simple from across a room.

Six sculpted tulip petals hold the stone in place of standard claws, and the band is the slimmest of the five at 1.40mm.

What we like

  • The lowest-priced complete ring here with a 1 carat center stone
  • Six prongs spread the grip on the stone, which Rare Carat presents as a security feature
  • A matching Marigold eternity band is offered at $590

Keep in mind

  • The listing limits the setting to round, cushion, oval, pear, marquise and heart stones
  • The matching band is an eternity band, and Rare Carat's resizing policy says eternity bands cannot be resized after 30 days
  • A 1.40mm band is fine on a slim hand but can look thin under a large stone
Price range
$1,090 complete: $695 for the setting and $395 for the 1 ct lab diamond, 14K white gold (checked 2026-09-27)
Material
14K white gold; 1 ct round lab-grown diamond with pavé lab diamonds on the band

Best east-west setting

Rare Carat Domo East-West Bezel Solitaire Engagement Ring

by Rare Carat

Best for: A buyer with an oval, emerald or other long stone in mind who wants it set sideways and protected by a smooth rim.

Rare Carat describes "sculpted bezel walls with rounded volume" that hold the center stone east-west, and the band is 2.50mm wide.

What we like

  • A bezel wraps the stone's edge, so there are no prongs to snag or bend
  • A 2.50mm band, wider than the toi et moi and tulip picks, under a stone that sits across the finger
  • You choose the stone, so the budget can go where you want it

Keep in mind

  • Setting only: the $995 does not include a stone, so the finished ring costs that plus whatever stone you choose
  • The page opens showing a round stone, which has no east or west; the style needs an elongated cut
  • No customer reviews were shown on the listing when we opened it, and no matching band was offered
Price range
$995 for the setting only, 14K white gold; the center stone is extra (checked 2026-09-27)

Best with colored stones

Rare Carat Hayden Curved Vine Tsavorite and Diamond Engagement Ring With 1 Carat Round Lab Diamond

by Rare Carat

Best for: A buyer who wants color in the ring without giving up a white diamond in the center.

Angled marquise tsavorites "in a striking emerald hue" sit on curving vines either side of the center stone, and the page lets you swap them for other accent stones.

What we like

  • Color comes from the accents, so the center stone stays a graded lab diamond
  • The accent stone can be changed on the page: diamond, emerald, pink sapphire, sapphire, tsavorite, black diamond or amethyst
  • A matching Hayden tsavorite and diamond band is offered at $850

Keep in mind

  • The most expensive complete ring of the five
  • The listing does not give the tsavorites' size or say whether they are treated
  • The same curved vine shape as the diamond-only Hayden, so it is the color, not the outline, that sets it apart
Price range
$1,530 complete: $1,135 for the setting and $395 for the 1 ct lab diamond, 14K white gold (checked 2026-09-27)
Material
14K white gold; 1 ct round lab-grown diamond, marquise tsavorite accents and pavé diamonds

How We Chose

What Makes an Engagement Ring Unique

A ring stands out for one of three reasons: the metal around the stone is shaped differently, the stone is something other than a colorless round diamond, or there is more than one main stone. Every unusual engagement ring changes at least one of those three things, and the picks above were chosen to show each of them.

The Setting

The setting is where most of the difference lives, because it is the part you see around the stone. A bezel wraps a rim of metal around the stone’s edge instead of holding it with prongs. GIA’s guide to ring settings, published in August 2026, says a bezel offers “excellent resistance to chips and everyday wear” and that its smooth edges are “less likely to catch on clothing or gloves”, but that it lets “slightly less light” into the stone. Our bezel setting guide covers the trade-off in full.

A vine setting shapes the shoulders like a climbing stem, usually lined with small diamonds, as on the Vionne. A tulip setting replaces plain claws with petal-shaped prongs; the Marigold uses six. An east-west setting turns an elongated stone such as an oval, emerald, marquise or pear on its side so it sits across the band, and the Natural Diamond Council traces it to Art Deco and Retro designs of the early 20th century. If your fingers are long, our guide to engagement rings for long fingers explains why a sideways stone suits them. For every other mount, see our guide to engagement ring settings.

The Stone

A pale pink pear-shaped stone framed by small diamonds on a rose gold band, resting on a blue crystal

A colored center stone is the quickest way to a ring nobody mistakes for a standard solitaire. Sapphire is the classic choice, and our guide to sapphire engagement rings covers treatment and origin. Moissanite gives a large, bright stone for less money, and our moissanite engagement rings page compares what it costs. The Hayden pick takes a middle road: the center is a white lab diamond, and the color comes from small marquise tsavorites on the vines, which Rare Carat lets you swap for emerald, sapphire, pink sapphire, amethyst or black diamond accents.

Every complete ring on this page has a lab-grown center diamond, which is what keeps a 1 carat stone inside these prices. Our guide to lab-grown vs natural diamonds explains what separates the two and what a grading report for each should show.

Two Stones Instead of One

A toi et moi sets two main stones side by side. GIA’s settings guide says the two stones typically symbolize “two souls coming together”, and the name is French for “you and me”. Our full guide to toi et moi rings prices versions from several jewelers and covers the history behind the style.

Simple Unique Engagement Rings

Simple unique engagement rings keep the outline of a solitaire and move the difference into a detail you notice up close.

Details That Show Up Close

The Marigold is the clearest example on this page. From across a room it reads as a round solitaire on a thin 1.40mm band; only close up do the six tulip-shaped prongs show. A slim bezel does the same, and so does a hidden halo, a row of small diamonds tucked under the center stone that shows from the side rather than from above. Several of the designs on Rare Carat’s engagement ring page carried a “Hidden Halo” label when we looked.

Low, Plain and Still Different

If sitting low matters more than the detail, our low-profile engagement rings page covers settings that keep the stone close to the finger. Metal is the other quiet lever: a vine or tulip setting in yellow gold looks further from the classic white solitaire than the same ring in white gold, and our guide to gold engagement rings covers yellow, white and rose gold.

Non-Traditional Engagement Rings: What to Check Before You Buy

A ring built around an unusual shape raises three questions a plain solitaire does not.

Can It Be Resized?

Rare Carat resizes a ring once for free in the first year, but its policy says that once something is sent in for resizing, “it can’t be returned”. The free resize and the 30-day return are one or the other, not both. The band needs its own check: the same policy says eternity bands “can’t be resized after 30 days”, and the matching band offered with the Marigold is an eternity band. Measure first with our printable ring sizer.

Will a Wedding Band Sit Flush?

Twisting shanks, sideways stones and two-stone heads all change the outline a wedding band has to meet. Three of the listings answer that with a band made for the ring, shown beside it on the page on 27 September 2026:

Engagement ringMatching band offeredBand price, 14K white goldRing and band together
Vionne Vine, 1,495 dollarsVionne Winding Band980 dollars2,475 dollars
Hayden Tsavorite, 1,530 dollarsHayden Tsavorite and Diamond Band850 dollars2,380 dollars
Marigold Tulip, 1,090 dollarsMarigold Lab Diamond Eternity Band590 dollars1,680 dollars
Toi et Moi Oval and Pear, 800 dollarsNone shown
Domo East-West Bezel, 995 dollars before a stoneNone shown

The totals are the two listed prices added up, before any bundle saving the page applies at checkout. For those, our guides to curved wedding bands, bands for oval engagement rings and bands for bezel-set engagement rings cover the shapes that close the gap.

Returns on Made-to-Order Rings

Four of the five listings say Rare Carat’s goldsmiths “craft your setting, set your diamond, and finish every ring to order”, and each listing quoted delivery between 7 and 9 October for an order placed on 27 September. Made to order does not remove the right to return: Rare Carat’s policy takes any order back within 30 days of the shipment date for a full refund, unworn and with its diamond certificate, which carries a 250 dollar fee if lost. The clock starts when the ring ships, not when it arrives. Our Rare Carat review looks at those terms in more detail.

Unique Wedding Rings and Bands to Match

The phrase unique wedding rings covers two things: the engagement ring itself, for which every style above applies, and the band worn beside it, which either matches the engagement ring or deliberately contrasts with it.

Unique Wedding Ring Sets

A set pairs the engagement ring with a band designed for it, which is the surest way to a flush fit on an unusual shape, and three of the five picks above can be bought that way. Rare Carat labels the pairing “Buy together and save” on each of those pages. Our guide to bridal sets compares sets from several jewelers. For unique wedding rings for her that are not part of a set, our custom wedding rings guide covers bands made to a design of your own, from hand finishes to cast lettering.

For Couples

Unique wedding rings for couples do not have to match each other or the engagement ring. A shared metal or finish in two different widths ties a pair together without making them identical, and our guide to his and hers wedding bands prices matched pairs from several makers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Most Unique Engagement Ring?

No ranking of unique engagement rings exists, so the most unique engagement ring is the one least like what others wear. In The Knot’s 2026 Real Weddings Study, round and oval stones made up just over half of all rings; a toi et moi, an east-west setting or a colored stone moves furthest from that.

What Is the Prettiest Wedding Ring?

There is no measure of the prettiest wedding ring; it is the one that suits the engagement ring and the hand wearing it. In practice that means a band that meets the engagement ring’s outline without a gap, which is why a band from the same maker is often the safest choice for an unusual setting.

Are East West Engagement Rings Unique?

Yes. GIA’s oval cut guide says an east-west setting, with the stone laid horizontally across the finger, “creates a unique, fashion-forward look”. It needs an elongated cut such as an oval, emerald, pear or marquise. The Natural Diamond Council reports that Zendaya wore an east-west elongated cushion diamond at the 2025 Golden Globes.

What Is the Anti-Engagement Ring Trend?

An anti-engagement ring is a ring someone buys for themselves, with no proposal attached. The Natural Diamond Council described them in April 2026 as rings “often purchased by the person who will be wearing them”, also called “self-love rings”. Any style on this page can serve as one; only the meaning changes.

What Is the Gen Z Engagement Ring Trend?

No single design defines it, but survey data points to choice and alternatives. Helzberg’s 2025 survey of 1,000 US adults aged 20 to 40 found 63% of Gen Z respondents likely to consider moissanite, against 52% of millennials, and 84% of Gen Z proposers said their partner had shown them the ring they wanted.

What Engagement Rings Are Out of Style?

No authority publishes such a list, and the sales data shows classic choices still selling. JCK, reporting The Knot’s 2026 study, wrote that white metal settings “still dominate” but are in decline, while 39% of couples chose yellow gold, up 140% in five years. White gold is less in fashion than it was, not out.
