Gold wedding bands are sold under one word that covers three different products: a ring made of gold alloy throughout, a ring with a mechanically bonded layer of gold over another metal, and a ring electroplated with a film of gold measured in microns. Of the six picks below, read on each seller’s own site on 20 September 2026, five are solid gold and one is plated, and the listings say which in language a federal marking rule shapes. Our overall pick is the With Clarity Women’s Low Dome Comfort Fit Band, because it sells the same design in 14KT and in 18KT at published prices, so the cost of a karat stops being a guess.

Key Takeaways
- Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, the bare word gold describes only fine 24 karat gold, so any lower alloy must carry its karat immediately before the word, in equally conspicuous type (16 CFR 23.3(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- Gold plated and gold filled are not synonyms. A mechanically applied plating qualifies as gold filled only when it is at least one twentieth of the article’s metal weight, against one fortieth for gold plate, rolled gold plate and gold overlay (16 CFR 23.3(c)(2)).
- Karat is a price ladder on the same design, and we could measure it: the With Clarity women’s band at 1.5mm ran $500 to $720 as the metal moved from 14KT to 18KT on 20 September 2026.
- It is not a metal ladder. On Rockford Collection’s NORSE band at 2.5mm, platinum opened only about 3% above the same design in 18k gold.
- Total Materia (2009) gives the gold fractions as 75% for 18K, 58.3% for 14K and 41.7% for 10K, and GIA (2025) writes that 24k is the purest and softest, making it more prone to scratches and dents.

With Clarity Women's Low Dome Comfort Fit Band
by With Clarity
Best for: Seeing exactly what a karat costs, because the same band is priced in both 14KT and 18KT.
Solid gold, and the karat is a menu choice rather than fine print: the same design is listed in 14KT and 18KT at published prices for each.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- The same design in six gold options, so 14KT against 18KT is a like for like comparison rather than a guess

- Four widths from 1.5mm to 3mm, which covers most women's plain bands
Keep in mind
- The product page we read does not list ring sizes

- Price range
- $500 to $1,220
- Material
- Solid 14KT or 18KT gold, yellow, white or rose
- Widths
- 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm and 3mm

Best for: A men's plain gold band where the width and the karat both move the price in public.
Solid gold in both karats, with the karat named in the metal selector on every price.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- Four men's widths, and the price changes with width rather than being quoted at one size
- At 4mm the 14KT version opened at $1,360 and the 18KT at $1,990, read on 20 September 2026
- The same low dome profile as the women's band above, which makes a matching pair straightforward
Keep in mind
- Nothing under $1,000, so this is not the budget end of the page
- No ring sizes on the product page we read
- The maker publishes no gram weight, so you cannot compare how much metal each width holds
- Price range
- $1,360 to $3,090
- Material
- Solid 14KT or 18KT gold, yellow, white or rose
- Widths
- 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and 7mm

Larson Jewelers 14k White Gold Domed Wedding Band
by Larson Jewelers
Best for: One plain design that runs from a 2mm women's band to a 10mm men's band in the same finish.
Solid 14k white gold, listed under the retailer's solid gold rings rather than its separate gold plated range.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- Nine widths and 26 ring sizes from 3 to 15.5, the widest published span among our picks
- Two people can take the same profile at different widths without leaving the listing
- The site header states lifetime sizing, which matters on a band you expect to have adjusted
Keep in mind
- White gold only on this design, so yellow and rose mean a different listing
- The price swing across widths is large, and the low figure is the narrowest band
- The retailer does not publish the alloy behind its white gold, so ask what the plating covers
- Price range
- $629.99 to $4,319.99
- Material
- Solid 14k white gold
- Widths
- 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm and 10mm

Solid 14K yellow gold, with the karat printed in the listing's own material field.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.

- One of the few plain bands we opened that publishes a band height, 1.35mm, next to its 5mm width
- The warranty names what it covers, including rhodium re-plating and one free resize in the first year
- Two free return labels per order, inside a 30 day window from delivery
Keep in mind
- One width and one color on this listing, so there is no karat comparison to make here
- Returns are refused on a ring another jeweler has repaired, resized or engraved
- The second resize is not free, and shipping for a resize after 30 days is yours to arrange or to buy
- Price range
- $1,169
- Material
- Solid 14K yellow gold
- Widths
- 5mm, at a stated band height of 1.35mm
- Sizes
- Ring size is chosen on the listing; a shopper question on the page was answered for size 13.5

Best for comparing gold to platinum
Rockford Collection NORSE Gold Ring, 2.5mm
by Rockford Collection
Best for: Pricing one design in 14k, 18k and platinum without changing anything else.
Solid gold or platinum, described by the maker as a solid gold or platinum ring and priced separately for each.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- Seven metals on one design, which is the cleanest metal comparison we found on this page
- On 20 September 2026 the 2.5mm opened at $1,360 in 14k, $1,710 in 18k and $1,765 in platinum
- Engraving inside or outside the ring is offered on the listing
Keep in mind
- The shortest return window on this page, 14 days, and a $250 restocking fee applies to returns
- A customized ring cannot be returned at all, and engraving is a customization
- Size is confirmed by email after you have paid rather than chosen on the page
- Price range
- $1,360 to $1,765
- Material
- Solid 14k or 18k gold, yellow, white or rose, or platinum
- Widths
- 2.5mm on this listing; the maker states the design also comes in 3mm and 5mm
- Sizes
- The maker says it sends a size verification email after purchase
- Guarantee
- 14 day money-back guarantee with a $250 restocking fee on returns; customized rings are not refundable
Budget, and what plated means
Larson Jewelers ORO Gold-Plated Tungsten Carbide Ring
by Larson Jewelers
Best for: A gold look at a fraction of the price, as long as you know it is a coating.
Gold plated, and the listing says so in its title, but it does not publish the karat fineness of the plating that the FTC's marking examples call for.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- One price, $229.99, across every width and size we saw on the listing
- The word plated is in the product title, which is the disclosure the FTC guides ask for
- A lifetime and lifetime sizing warranty is stated on the listing itself
Keep in mind
- It is a coating over tungsten carbide: the gold is a surface, and surfaces wear
- The listing does not state the karat fineness of the plating, its thickness, or how long the finish should last
- The maker's claim that gold tungsten rings are much more durable than 14k gold rings is a seller's comparison, with no test published beside it
- Price range
- $229.99
- Material
- Gold-plated tungsten carbide, not solid gold
- Widths
- 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm
- Sizes
- 2.5 to 15, in half sizes
- Guarantee
- The listing states a Thorsten lifetime and lifetime sizing warranty, excluding re-engraving; returns within 30 days in unused, resalable condition
How We Chose
- Every listing opened on the seller’s own site on 20 September 2026, with prices in US dollars as the page showed them.
- One design priced in more than one karat wherever it existed, because that is the only way to see what a karat costs without changing anything else.
- Solid, filled or plated stated for every pick, taken from the listing rather than inferred from the photograph or the price.
- Return, resizing and warranty terms quoted from each seller’s own page, with a term we could not find written as not stated.
- One plated ring kept deliberately, so the comparison shows what the cheaper category actually is instead of leaving it out.
- No star ratings, no review counts and nothing about how a band feels on the hand, because we did not buy or wear these rings.
Solid Gold vs Plated or Filled: What the Listing Should Say
Nine of the shop pages ranking for this search on 20 September 2026 put the word gold in the title and left the rest for the product page. That is where the useful distinction lives, and US guidance says quite a lot about how it has to be written.

What the Word Gold Promises on Its Own
The FTC Jewelry Guides treat an unqualified gold as a claim of purity. Section 23.3(b)(1) calls it misleading to use the word without qualification for anything that is not composed throughout of fine (24 karat) gold, and (b)(2) says a lower alloy may use the word only when a correct karat designation immediately precedes it, in type of at least equal conspicuousness. That is why every solid pick on this page carries a number in front: 14KT, 18KT, 14k, 18k. A band advertised as a gold wedding band with no number anywhere is the one to ask about.
Plated, Filled and Overlay Are Three Different Things
Section 23.3(c)(2) and (c)(3) set out the thresholds, and they are not interchangeable. A mechanically applied plating of at least 10 karat fineness may be called gold plate, gold overlay or rolled gold plate when it constitutes at least one fortieth of the weight of the metal in the entire article. The term gold filled becomes available only when that plating reaches one twentieth of the article’s metal weight, so gold filled is the thicker of the two by a factor of two. Electroplating is a third category with its own floor: at least 10 karat fineness and a minimum thickness throughout equivalent to 0.175 microns of fine gold, rising to about 2.5 microns before the maker may say heavy gold electroplate.
Our budget pick shows how far a listing can go and still leave a gap. Larson’s ORO ring puts gold-plated in its own title, which is the qualification (b)(3) asks for, and it stops there: the page does not publish the karat fineness of the plating or its thickness, both of which the regulation’s own examples of compliant marking include. That is worth a question before you buy, not an accusation, and the answer decides how long the color lasts.
The Word Solid Has a Rule of Its Own
The guides also police the opposite claim. The note to section 23.3(c)(1) says a gold alloy product with a hollow center or interior should not be marked or described as solid, and gives 14 Kt. Solid Gold as an example of what not to write on one. Two of the shop titles ranking for gold ring searches on 20 September 2026 led with the word solid, which is a real distinction when the ring is not hollow. Ask for the weight in grams if a wide band is priced surprisingly low, because a hollow band and a filled one weigh very differently.
Choosing a Karat
Karat counts parts in 24, and everything else follows from that ratio. Our 10K vs 14K gold guide covers the durability evidence and the legal minimum question in full, and 14K vs 18K gold does the same for the step above; what follows is the part that decides a purchase.
10K, 14K and 18K at a Glance
Total Materia (2009) gives the fractions: 18K is 75% pure gold, 14K is 58.3% and 10K is 41.7%. The rest is alloy metal, and the alloy is what makes a ring hard enough to wear. GIA (2025) writes that 14k and 18k gold, which are alloyed with other metals for increased strength, are more suitable for everyday wear, and that higher karat gold such as 24k is the purest and softest, making it more prone to scratches and dents. Neither GIA nor the FTC ranks 14K against 18K for durability, so treat any seller that does as giving an opinion.
What a Karat Actually Costs on the Same Band
Sellers rarely make this comparison easy, because the karat usually changes with the design. Three of our picks price one design across karats, which lets us read the gap directly rather than compare different rings.
| Listing, read 20 September 2026 | Price across the metals offered | What the step up costs |
|---|---|---|
| With Clarity Women’s Low Dome, 1.5mm | $500 to $720, 14KT to 18KT | 44% more for 18KT |
| With Clarity Men’s Low Dome, 4mm | $1,360 to $1,990, 14KT to 18KT | 46% more for 18KT |
| Rockford Collection NORSE, 2.5mm | $1,360 to $1,765, 14k to platinum | 26% more for 18k, 30% more for platinum |
Two things fall out of that table. The step from 14K to 18K was never small and never the same size twice, which is a real premium for a quarter more gold. And platinum, the metal usually described as the expensive one, sat barely above 18k gold on the only design here that offers both. Metal is not a simple price ladder, a point our guide to what a wedding band costs makes with its own figures.
Why 24K Bands Are Rare in the US
Twenty four karat is the only gold the FTC lets you call gold with no qualifier, and it is also the softest. GIA’s point about purity and scratching is the whole answer to why US wedding bands cluster at 10K, 14K and 18K instead. If you want the deep yellow that high karat gold gives, the closest practical stop is 18K, and you accept a softer band than 14K in exchange.
Yellow, White or Rose
The color is an alloy decision, not a coating decision, with one large exception.
Yellow Gold
Yellow is gold alloyed to stay yellow, so nothing is covering it and nothing wears through. It needs no plating to keep its color, which makes it the lowest maintenance of the three, and it is the color most of the listings we opened default to.
White Gold and the Rhodium Underneath
White gold is not a naturally white metal. GIA (2015) describes it as made by alloying gold with nickel or palladium, copper and zinc, typically at 14K, which it gives as 583 parts pure gold and 417 parts other metals, or 18K at 750 parts. The brightness you see in the photograph is usually rhodium, and GIA is explicit that the rhodium plating will wear away gradually over time, requiring the ring to be replated occasionally. That is an upkeep item to price in, and one seller on this page, Angara, names rhodium re-plating as a service its lifetime warranty covers. For the full comparison, see white gold vs yellow gold and, against the other white metal, platinum or white gold.
Rose Gold
Rose gold is gold alloyed with a higher proportion of copper, which is where the color comes from, and our rose gold vs yellow gold guide publishes the composition. Four of our six picks offer it at the same price as yellow and white in the same karat, which tells you the color is a recipe rather than a surcharge.
Nickel and Sensitive Skin
GIA writes that people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with this metal, and none of the white gold listings we opened published its alloy. If you react to jewelry, ask which whitening metal the alloy uses before you order, and read our guide to hypoallergenic metals first.
Gold vs Other Metals, in Brief
Gold is one of seven or more metals a wedding band can be made of, and the trade-offs against tungsten, titanium, ceramic and cobalt are set out cell by cell in our comparison of how gold compares to other metals. Two differences matter here. Gold can be resized and the hard alternative metals mostly cannot, which is why our gold picks come with resizing terms and a tungsten ring comes with a replacement policy instead. And gold has a scrap value the alternatives do not, which is part of why the plated pick on this page costs a fifth of the solid ones. Every band on this page is plain; if you want gold set with diamonds, our diamond wedding band picks include half-eternity, pave and channel-set bands in 14K and 18K.
Which Gold Wedding Band Should You Choose?
Work down the left column until a row matches you. Every row traces to a listing we opened or to the FTC and GIA text quoted above.
| Your situation | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the least upkeep over decades | Solid yellow or rose gold, any karat | No plating to wear through, so nothing has to be renewed |
| You want the whitest look and accept maintenance | Solid white gold | GIA: rhodium plating wears away and the ring needs replating occasionally |
| Your budget is under $300 | A plated ring, bought as a plated ring | The ORO pick opened under $250, and the word plated is in its title |
| You want the most gold your budget allows | 18K on a design priced in both karats | The gap was 26% to 46% on the three listings we could compare |
| You want the hardest gold alloy for daily wear | 14K or 10K rather than 18K or 24K | GIA: more alloy means more strength, and 24k is the softest |
| You are matching an engagement ring you already own | The same karat and the same color | Two karats side by side wear and age at different rates |
| You react to jewelry | Yellow or rose gold, and ask for the alloy in writing | GIA: avoid white gold alloyed with nickel if you are allergic to it |
| You want one design for both of you | A listing that runs from narrow to wide | Larson’s domed band spans 2mm to 10mm in one finish |
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Should a Gold Wedding Band Cost?
On the listings we read on 20 September 2026, solid gold bands ran $500 to $4,319.99, the low figure a narrow 14KT women’s band and the high one a 10mm 14k design, with one plated ring under $250. No trade body publishes an average, so the honest answer is that span rather than a single number. Width and karat move it most.
Is 14K or 18K Better for a Wedding Band?
Neither is better outright, and no authority we read ranks them. 18K holds more gold and 14K holds more alloy metal, so 18K is richer in color and softer, and it cost between a quarter and a half more on the three designs we could price in both karats. 14K is the harder, cheaper option. Choose by which of those you care about.
What Karat of Gold Is Ideal for a Wedding Band?
There is no ideal karat published by a standards body. GIA says 14k and 18k are alloyed for increased strength and suits them to everyday wear, which is why US bands cluster there. 10K is harder still and paler, 24K is the softest and is rare in wedding bands. Match the karat of any ring you will wear beside it.
Why Is 18k Gold So Cheap?
We found no evidence that it is. On every design we could price in both karats on 20 September 2026, 18K cost more than 14K rather than less, by a quarter to a half. Where 18K looks cheaper, the two rings differ in width, in weight or in whether the gold goes all the way through.
Is $1,400 on a Men’s Wedding Band a Lot?
It sits in the middle of what we read. A 4mm 14KT men’s band opened just under $1,400, so that figure buys a solid gold band of ordinary width from a mainstream seller. It buys a great deal more in a plated ring and considerably less in 18K at a wide profile. The number only means something beside a width and a karat.
What Are Some Good Men’s Gold Wedding Bands Under $500?
None of our solid gold picks opened under $500, and the cheapest men’s option on this page is a plated ring under $250. In a men’s width at that budget, expect plating, and expect the listing to put the word in its title, which is what the FTC guides ask for. The cheapest solid gold band here was a narrow 14KT women’s design.
