All six picks below are newly made vintage engagement rings in the vintage-inspired sense, not antiques. GIA calls a ring antique when it was made more than 100 years ago and vintage when it is not contemporary but not old enough to be antique. The prices are for the setting only, with no center stone, and run from $865 to $1,650 as read on 5 November 2026: five Rare Carat settings in 14K white gold, none over $1,310, and the Brilliant Earth Elsie at the top of the range in 18K yellow gold.
How we are paid. RingReel earns a commission from Rare Carat through the Awin network when you buy through a Rare Carat link on this page, at no cost to you. Brilliant Earth pays us nothing for its link: we have no active program with it, and we list it because it is on our approved list of jewelers. The picks come from the listings and terms below, not from who pays. Nothing here was bought or handled: it is researched, not tested.

Key Takeaways
- GIA’s 2018 guide defines antique as made more than 100 years ago, vintage as not contemporary but not yet antique, and estate as preowned jewelry that can be antique, vintage or contemporary.
- Brilliant Earth’s 2026 guide describes a vintage style ring as a newly made ring designed with historical motifs, which is what all six picks here are.
- The six settings cost $865 to $1,650 on 5 November 2026, with no center stone included, so the diamond is a separate purchase.
- GIA warns that an older ring can be very difficult to resize, and advises asking for at least seven days to return one.
- Brilliant Earth says filigree, pavé and engraving require more care, so a detailed ring asks more of its owner than a plain band does.

Best from a second jeweler
Brilliant Earth Elsie Engraved Ring in 18K Yellow Gold
by Brilliant Earth
Best for: A buyer who wants to compare a second jeweler, or who prefers a lower-set engraved ring in yellow gold.
Brilliant Earth says this "vintage-inspired engagement ring features hand-engraved detailing with an open cathedral silhouette", with hand-engraved milgrain and a low-profile fit.
Illustration of the setting type, not a photo of this ring.
What we like
- Hand engraving and hand-engraved milgrain on a low-profile fit, per Brilliant Earth
- A second jeweler with its own return and resizing terms to set against Rare Carat's
- Offered in six metals, including platinum
Keep in mind

- The setting is sold only with a Brilliant Earth diamond

- Widths
- 1.8mm
- Sizes
- Not stated
- Guarantee
- Free 30-day returns, extended for the holidays; free one-year resizing, per Brilliant Earth
How We Chose
- Named period detail only. A setting made the list only if the jeweler’s own description names a vintage feature: hand engraving, milgrain, wheat-pattern engraving, a beaded halo, feathered leaf detailing or half-moon stones. A ring that merely looks old in a photo was left out.
- Jewelers from our approved list. Five picks are from Rare Carat and one is from Brilliant Earth. Other stores sell vintage-style rings too; they are not ranked lower, they are simply not listed here.
- Nothing bought or handled. Every detail comes from the product page as read on 5 November 2026. We have not held any of these rings.
- One metal for comparison. Prices are for 14K white gold wherever it was offered, so the numbers line up. The Elsie is the exception, and its metal is stated in its row.
- Two settings left out on purpose. The Mila and the Carmel are also vintage-flavored, but they are already picks on our pages for emerald cut engagement rings and marquise engagement rings, so we did not repeat them.
- Rare Carat prices checked from the United States. The five Rare Carat prices and their in-stock status were rechecked from a U.S. connection on 5 November 2026. Brilliant Earth’s page refused that check, so the Elsie price is as read on its page the same day; confirm it before you decide.
Vintage vs Antique vs Vintage-Inspired
The three words are used loosely in shops, and the difference decides where you shop, what you can return and whether the ring can be resized. GIA and Brilliant Earth draw the lines this way.
| Term | What it means | Where you buy it | Resizing | Typical return window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antique | Made more than 100 years ago (GIA) | Antique and estate jewelers | Can be very difficult (GIA) | GIA advises asking for at least seven days |
| Vintage | Not contemporary, but not old enough to be antique (GIA) | Estate and vintage dealers | Ask the seller before you buy | Set by the seller |
| Vintage-inspired | A newly made ring designed with historical motifs1 | Online jewelers such as Rare Carat and Brilliant Earth | One free resize in year one at both jewelers on this page | 30 days at both jewelers, with a holiday extension |
1 source cited in this table
The picks on this page all sit in the last row. If you want the look of an old ring with the return terms of a new one, that is the trade you are making.
Buying new also means choosing the center stone yourself. Rare Carat describes itself as selling both lab and natural diamonds, and its settings here are priced without one. Brilliant Earth sells the Elsie only with a diamond bought from it, natural or lab-grown. Neither route gives you an old cut stone by default, so if an old mine or old European diamond is part of the appeal, read the section on old cuts below before you choose a setting.
What “Estate” Means
GIA defines estate jewelry as preowned jewelry that can be antique, vintage or contemporary. The word describes ownership, not age. An estate ring bought last year from a previous owner is estate; so is one from 1905. When a seller says estate, ask for the date of manufacture, because the word alone does not tell you the era.
The Eras Behind Vintage-Style Rings
Most vintage engagement rings borrow from a handful of periods. The dates below are GIA’s from its 2018 shopping guide; the signatures are how Brilliant Earth describes each era in its 2026 vintage style guide.
| Era | Dates (GIA) | Signature (Brilliant Earth) | Pick here that echoes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgian | 1714 to 1837 (GIA’s old mine guide) | Collet settings, rose cuts | None |
| Victorian | 1837 to 1901 | Halos, old mine and old European cuts | Bellavere Vintage Beaded Halo |
| Edwardian | 1890s to 1915 | Platinum, filigree, milgrain | Florant Laurel Vintage Lab |
| Art Deco | 1920s to 1930s | Geometry, Asscher and emerald cuts, baguettes | Vintage Cathedral Half-Moon |
| Retro | Mid-1930s to 1950s | Two-tone metals | None |
GIA gives the Edwardian era as the 1890s to 1915 in its 2018 guide, and other sources give other dates, so treat the range as GIA’s rather than a settled consensus. The last column is our reading of each ring’s design, not a claim by Rare Carat.
For the Art Deco row, the nearest pick here is the Vintage Cathedral Half-Moon, whose geometric half-moon stones are our reading of the style, not Rare Carat’s label. Baguette and step-cut settings made in that style, and what to check on an original 1920s ring, are a subject of their own, and the Deco look is also something a jeweler doing custom engagement rings can build to order.
Victorian and Edwardian Engagement Rings
GIA dates the Victorian era to 1837 to 1901 and the Edwardian to the 1890s to 1915. Brilliant Earth associates Victorian rings with halos and old cuts, and Edwardian rings with platinum, filigree and milgrain. That explains the two picks above: the Bellavere uses a beaded halo, and the Florant carries milgrain feathered leaf detailing, offered in platinum as well as 14K white gold.
Old Mine and Old European Cuts
Old cuts are the stones themselves, and they are not part of any of the six settings, which hold whatever center stone you choose. GIA’s 2025 guide says the old mine cut is squarish, has 58 facets like the modern brilliant and was common from the early 1700s to the late 1800s. It describes the old European cut as distinctly round with a smaller culet, a higher crown and more depth. If you want one of these cuts, you are looking for an antique or estate stone, and the section on buying a true antique below applies. For how the modern shapes compare, see our guide to engagement ring shapes.
The Details That Make a Ring Look Vintage
Three details do most of the work, and each one is also something to maintain.
Milgrain
Brilliant Earth describes milgrain as tiny beaded edges along bezels, rails or shanks. It is on the Islay and Corinne edges and in the Florant’s leaf detailing, according to Rare Carat’s descriptions, and Brilliant Earth lists hand-engraved milgrain on the Elsie. Like the other fine details on this page, it is worth asking the jeweler how to look after it.
Filigree
Filigree, per Brilliant Earth, is intricate wire-like openwork in scrolls that gives a lace-like effect. Brilliant Earth ties it to the Edwardian era and names it first among the delicate features that require more care. None of the six listings here names filigree, which is why we describe the looks they do name rather than promise it.
Hand Engraving
Brilliant Earth describes engraving as patterns like wheat, scrolls or chevrons carved into the band. The Islay, Corinne, Bellavere and Elsie all name engraving in their descriptions, and the Corinne’s is the wheat pattern. Brilliant Earth lists engraving with filigree and pavé among the details that require more care, and grooves in the metal can collect dirt, so plan on regular cleaning. The Islay also has a cathedral setting, where the shoulders rise to lift the stone; our guide to the cathedral setting explains what that changes about the profile, and the same applies to the Half-Moon.
Which Metal Suits a Vintage Engagement Ring?
Metal changes both the look and the price of a vintage-style setting. Brilliant Earth calls platinum the dominant metal of the Edwardian era, and it ties two-tone gold to Retro rings, so platinum is the period-correct choice if an Edwardian look is the goal. Every pick here except the Elsie was priced in the same five metals, so the table below compares them directly. All prices are for the setting only, read from a U.S. connection on 5 November 2026.
| Setting | 14K white gold | 14K yellow gold | 18K white gold | Platinum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Islay Hand-Engraved Solitaire | 1,310 dollars | 1,295 dollars | 1,715 dollars | 1,595 dollars |
| Corinne Vintage Engraved Solitaire | 865 dollars | 860 dollars | 1,130 dollars | 1,045 dollars |
| Bellavere Vintage Beaded Halo | 1,145 dollars | 1,135 dollars | 1,590 dollars | 1,375 dollars |
| Florant Laurel Vintage Lab | 1,125 dollars | 1,115 dollars | 1,535 dollars | 1,305 dollars |
| Vintage Cathedral Half-Moon | 1,160 dollars | 1,160 dollars | 1,615 dollars | 1,525 dollars |
| Elsie Engraved Ring | Not read | Not read | Not read | Not read (priced in 18K yellow gold only) |
Two things stand out. First, on all five Rare Carat settings platinum costs less than 18K white gold, so if you were going to pay for 18K, platinum is the cheaper upgrade at this jeweler. Second, the step from 14K white gold to platinum runs from $180 to $365, with the Corinne and Florant at the low end and the Half-Moon at the high end. Yellow and white 14K gold are within a few dollars of each other on every setting. For what the two white metals mean in daily wear, see our comparison of platinum vs white gold.
Living With a Vintage-Style Ring
The details that make these rings look old are also the ones that ask for attention. Brilliant Earth says delicate features like filigree, pavé and engraving require more care, and four of the six picks have engraving while the Florant adds pavé-style lab accents. None of that is a reason to avoid them, but it changes what owning one looks like.
Profile and Daily Wear
Brilliant Earth advises lower-to-medium profiles and protected settings for people who are very active, and says low-set designs suit active lifestyles while ornate high-set rings emphasize artistry. On this page, the Elsie is described by Brilliant Earth as a low-profile fit, while the Vintage Cathedral Half-Moon sits highest. The Islay’s cathedral shoulders also lift its stone. If you work with your hands, the Corinne or the Elsie keep the center stone closer to the finger than the Half-Moon does.
Resizing and Returns
Buying new changes the terms more than the look. Rare Carat offers one free resize in the first year, and Brilliant Earth lists free resizing for one year. Rare Carat’s returns are 30 days, extended to January 15, 2027 for holiday orders, and Brilliant Earth also advertises 30 day returns with an extended holiday window. Compare that with GIA’s advice for antiques, where seven days is the minimum to insist on and resizing can be very difficult. Size the finger carefully before ordering anyway, because a free resize is still time without the ring.
Matching Bands
Engraved and beaded settings look best next to a band made for them. Four of the five Rare Carat picks have a matching band on their pages, from $650 to $920 as read on 5 November 2026: the Islay, Corinne, Bellavere and Florant. The Half-Moon has none of its own, so ask Rare Carat which of its bands sits flush against the side stones before you order. For the Elsie, check Brilliant Earth’s matching options on its page.
How to Buy a True Antique Engagement Ring
If the six new rings are not what you wanted, GIA’s 2018 guide gives a checklist for buying a real one.
- Do not assume the stones are natural or original. GIA says not to assume that because a ring is older, the stones are natural, and notes that fine gems in some older pieces have been removed and replaced with imitations.
- Look at the prongs. GIA says thin or worn prongs cannot hold the stone as securely, which makes it vulnerable to loss.
- Ask about resizing before you buy. GIA notes antique and vintage rings can be very difficult to resize, especially to go much larger or smaller.
- Get at least seven days to return it. GIA says to insist on no less.
- Prefer a diamond with a GIA report. GIA calls it wise to buy pieces whose diamonds come with GIA grading reports.
- Get an appraisal that records condition. GIA says an appraisal should give a full description of the piece, including its condition.
- Check the seller. GIA suggests asking how many years the seller has been in business and checking their Better Business Bureau record.
Affordable Vintage Engagement Rings: Antique or New?
GIA says antique and vintage engagement rings range from less than $1,000 to more than $100,000, so age alone does not predict price. We found no source that says antique rings cost less or more than new ones. What we can state is what this page prices: new vintage-inspired settings that start from $865 without a center stone. If a budget is the main concern, our page on engagement rings under $1,000 shows what a full ring costs at that level. Adding a diamond to any setting here will usually take the total past that level.
Which Vintage Engagement Ring Fits You?
| If you want | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The classic engraved solitaire | Islay Hand-Engraved Solitaire | Hand engraving and milgrain edges on a cathedral solitaire, 1,310 dollars |
| The lowest price | Corinne Vintage Engraved Solitaire | Wheat-pattern engraving and fine milgrain, 865 dollars |
| A halo without diamonds in it | Bellavere Vintage Beaded Halo | A beaded metal halo, 1,145 dollars |
| Side stones with a feathered leaf design | Florant Laurel Vintage Lab | 36 lab diamonds with milgrain detailing, 1,125 dollars |
| A geometric, higher profile ring | Vintage Cathedral Half-Moon | Half-moon lab diamonds in a cathedral design, 1,160 dollars |
| A low-set ring from a second jeweler | Elsie Engraved Ring | Hand engraving, open cathedral silhouette, low-profile fit, 1,650 dollars in 18K yellow gold |
All prices in this table are for the setting only in 14K white gold unless stated, read on 5 November 2026. The Corinne’s matching contoured band also appears on our page of wedding bands for halo rings, if you want to see it next to other bands made to sit against an engagement ring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Vintage Engagement Rings Worth Anything?
It depends on the stones and the condition. GIA says antique and vintage engagement rings run from less than $1,000 to more than $100,000, and it recommends an appraisal that records the ring’s condition. A new vintage-style setting like those here is priced as a new ring, and neither jeweler on this page states what it would fetch on resale.
Are Antique Engagement Rings Cheaper?
We found no source that says so. GIA gives a range from less than $1,000 to more than $100,000, which means an antique can cost less than or far more than a new ring. For comparison, the new vintage-style settings on this page start from $865 on 5 November 2026, without a center stone.
Where Can I Buy Vintage Looking Engagement Rings?
For newly made rings with period details, online jewelers such as Rare Carat and Brilliant Earth sell them, and the six on this page are from those two. For a true antique, look to antique and estate jewelers, and use GIA’s checklist on seller history, returns and appraisal before you pay.
How to Identify an Antique Ring?
Start with the cut: old mine and old European cuts are signs of an earlier stone, per GIA. But stones may have been replaced, so a GIA report and an appraisal that records condition matter more than looks. GIA also suggests checking the prongs and the seller’s years in business. We did not find a reliable single mark that proves age.
What Did Engagement Rings Look Like in the Early 1900s?
The Edwardian era, which GIA places in the 1890s to 1915, is tied to platinum, filigree and milgrain, according to Brilliant Earth’s 2026 guide. Brilliant Earth adds old European cut diamonds, which GIA describes as distinctly round with a smaller culet and a higher crown. Edwardian-style rings are still made today, such as the Florant here.
