A toi et moi ring sets two stones side by side, and the name is French for “you and me”. GIA describes the style as two gemstones that “may match or contrast in shape, size or color”, and traces its fame to the ring Napoleon gave Josephine: a pear diamond beside a pear sapphire. Our overall pick is Rare Carat’s oval and pear lab diamond ring, a complete ring in 14K gold for under a thousand dollars. Below are six toi et moi rings from 500 to about 4,800 dollars, each priced as a finished ring with its stones on 25 September 2026, and what each seller’s terms say about returning or resizing it. If you are still choosing between styles, our page on unique engagement rings sets the toi et moi beside four other non-traditional designs.

How We Chose

What a Toi et Moi Ring Means

The phrase is French for “you and me”, and the design says it literally: two stones, one for each person, set so that they touch or nearly touch on one band. GIA’s guide to ring settings, published in August 2026, describes a toi et moi as “two gemstones set side by side, typically symbolizing two souls coming together”, and adds that they are “often set with prongs or bezels and can incorporate diamonds, colored gemstones or a combination of both”. Blue Nile’s own listing puts the same idea in retail language: two lab diamonds “set together side by side”, representing “connectedness”.

Matching or Contrasting Stones

The style has no rule about which two stones. GIA says they “may match or contrast in shape, size or color”. In practice the pairs on sale today fall into three kinds. Two white diamonds of different shapes, such as oval and pear or emerald and pear, are the most common. A diamond beside a colored stone, usually a blue sapphire, follows Napoleon’s ring. Two colored stones exist too: Angara’s two-sapphire ring says it is “Inspired by the iconic Toi et Moi style”.

Where It Sits Among Settings

A toi et moi is a way of arranging the center stones, not a setting type of its own: each stone is still held by prongs or a bezel. Our guide to engagement ring settings explains those mounts, and the prong or bezel choice matters here as it does on a solitaire.

Napoleon and Josephine’s Ring, Sold in 2013

The ring usually credited with the style is the one Napoleon Bonaparte gave Josephine. ABC News, reporting the sale in March 2013, described it as Napoleon’s engagement ring of 1796: a gold ring in an 18th-century setting it called toi et moi, with “opposing tear-shaped jewels”, a blue sapphire and a diamond of a little under a carat each.

It went to auction at Osenat in Fontainebleau, outside Paris, on 24 March 2013. The house had expected at least 15,000 euros. The hammer fell at 730,000 euros, which ABC reported as 949,000 dollars, “almost 50 times” the estimate, and 1.17 million dollars with the buyer’s 25% commission. An Osenat spokesperson told ABC the estimate was “the actual market value of the ring, minus Napoleon and Josephine provenance”. Two stones of under a carat each were worth a few thousand; the story was worth the rest.

The Diamond and Sapphire Pairing Today

That pairing is still sold. Rare Carat’s oval lab diamond and pear sapphire ring puts a one-carat stone on each side for 1,505 dollars in 14K white gold, and Angara pairs a natural emerald-cut sapphire with a natural pear diamond. If the sapphire is the part you care about, our guide to sapphire engagement rings covers treatment and origin in more depth.

The Megan Fox Ring and the Thorns Controversy

The toi et moi most people have seen recently is Megan Fox’s. In January 2022, Machine Gun Kelly, whose legal name is Colson Baker, proposed with an emerald and a diamond set side by side, which Marie Claire described as “a toi et moi style piece”. In his Instagram caption, quoted by CNN, he said he designed it with Stephen Webster as “the emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns”.

The controversy came from what he told Vogue in an interview published on 17 January 2022: “The bands are actually thorns. So if she tries to take it off, it hurts”, to which he added “Love is pain!”. BuzzFeed News reported that the remark set off a debate about “toxicity” and consent, with some people calling a ring that hurts to remove “possessive and controlling”. The ring’s design, not the two-stone style, was the problem, but it is why the question keeps appearing next to searches for toi et moi rings.

What One Maker Charges for Each Pairing

A toi et moi ring pairing a yellow cushion-cut stone with a pale emerald-cut stone, resting on white satin, one of many shape pairings a two-stone ring can take

Rare Carat sells the same 1.00 carat total lab diamond toi et moi in five shape pairings, which makes it a clean test of whether the pairing changes the price. We opened every version on 25 September 2026.

Rare Carat pairing, 1.00 ct total14K white gold14K yellow goldPlatinum”Comp. value” shown, 14K white

Oval lab diamond and pear sapphire, 2.00 ct total1,505 dollars1,520 dollars1,715 dollars2,780 dollars

The pairing barely moves the price: every diamond-only version sits between 775 and 835 dollars in 14K gold. The metal moves it more, with platinum adding 165 to 185 dollars over 14K white gold on each design. The “Comp. value” is the column to discount. On every version we read, it was about 1.85 times the price, a fixed ratio rather than a price anyone else charged, and Rare Carat’s page does not explain how it is set. Our Rare Carat review looks at that figure and at its return terms in detail.

The Free Item Is Not a Discount

Each page also showed an “Apply September End Sale Offer” box with a line offering it on orders of 1,000 dollars or more, a figure of 245 dollars struck through and the word “FREE”. That is a free item on larger orders, not money off the ring, and the 14K rings alone fall below the threshold. The “Total savings” figure on the page adds that item to the gap from the comp value, so the real price is the one printed next to “Comp. value”.

Buying a Toi et Moi: What to Check

A two-stone ring raises a few questions a solitaire does not.

Ask for Each Stone’s Grades

A toi et moi has two stones to grade, and sellers differ in how much they tell you. Blue Nile gave each stone’s shape, weight, measurements and average color and clarity. Helzberg gave the minimum color and clarity. With Clarity gave a grade floor, “F+ Color, VS+ Clarity”, and named IGI. Rare Carat’s product information, checked on 27 September 2026, lists F color and VS2 clarity with the total weight, as one grade for the lab diamonds rather than one per stone, and names no lab. None of that is a reason to rule a ring out; it is a reason to ask the seller in writing before you pay. Our guide to lab-grown vs natural diamonds explains what a report for each should show.

Decide the Size Before You Order

Resizing is where toi et moi terms diverge most. Blue Nile’s ring “cannot be resized”. Rare Carat offers one free resize in the first year, but a ring sent for resizing can no longer be returned. With Clarity resizes free within 30 days of receipt. Measure first with our printable ring sizer, and if the ring cannot be resized, treat the size as part of the order that cannot be undone.

Plan the Wedding Band

Two stones side by side make a wide, irregular outline, and a straight band often leaves a gap beside it. Curved and contoured bands are made for that gap. Our guides to curved wedding bands and to bands for pear-shaped engagement rings cover the shapes that sit closest, and With Clarity’s pick above already uses a bypass band whose ends curve around each stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Toi et Moi Ring Mean?

A toi et moi ring means “you and me”: the name is French, and the design sets two stones side by side, one for each partner. GIA describes the two stones as “typically symbolizing two souls coming together”. They can match or contrast, and can be diamonds, colored gems or one of each.

What Ring Did Napoleon Give Josephine?

Napoleon gave Josephine a gold toi et moi engagement ring in 1796, set with a pear-shaped blue sapphire and a pear-shaped diamond of a little under a carat each. It sold at the Osenat auction house in Fontainebleau in March 2013 for 730,000 euros at the hammer, many times its estimate.

What Was the Controversy Surrounding the Toi et Moi Ring?

It was Megan Fox’s. In January 2022 Machine Gun Kelly told Vogue that the emerald and diamond ring he designed sits on bands of thorns, so it “hurts” if she takes it off. BuzzFeed News reported a public debate about toxicity and consent. The criticism was aimed at the thorns, not at two-stone rings.
