This Brilliant Earth review starts with the short answer to whether Brilliant Earth is legit: yes. It is a public company that files reports with the SEC, founded in 2005, with 42 showrooms across the US at the end of 2025, free shipping both ways and a written 30-day return policy. The longer answer is in its complaints. On 18 September 2026 its Trustpilot score was 4.0 from 1,527 reviews, with 19% of them at one star, and the most recent one-star reviews cluster around stones lost after wear, which its free warranty does not cover. Every policy, figure and filing below was opened on 18 September 2026 and is quoted rather than paraphrased.

Brilliant Earth is a public company that reports to the SEC, founded in 2005, with 42 showrooms at the end of 2025, so its size and its legal disputes are on the record in a way a private jeweler's are not.

Who Brilliant Earth Is
Brilliant Earth was founded in 2005 by Beth Gerstein, now co-founder and CEO, and Eric Grossberg, who met at business school, according to its About page. Unlike most online jewelers, it is a public company: Brilliant Earth Group, Inc. files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC under the ticker BRLT. Its 10-K for 2025 says it sells “online and through 42 showrooms” in the US, with co-headquarters in San Francisco and Denver, and that its showrooms “do not stock significant amounts of inventory” but let customers “pick-up and return products purchased online in-store”.
That matters for trust in a practical way. A public company’s disputes, risks and size are written down under legal obligation, so a buyer can check them instead of relying on the brand’s own page. It is also why Brilliant Earth feels closer to a traditional jeweler than a pure web store: you can see the rings before you pay.
Its marketing leans on sourcing. Its lab-grown page offers “carbon capture” and “100% renewable energy” collections and “blockchain transparency”. Those are its claims; we have not verified them, and what such labels certify is a question for another page.
The Policies, in Its Own Words
| Policy | What Brilliant Earth writes | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Returns | “simply return or exchange it within 30 days. All items must be in their original, unworn condition.” | 30-Day Returns |
| When the clock starts | “timelines begin when your purchase is available for shipment or pickup” | 30-Day Returns |
| Not returnable | “Rings that have been resized or modified”, custom designs, and “Items purchased through our Lifetime Diamond Upgrade Program” | 30-Day Returns |
| Engraved rings | “you can return an engraved ring”, with a 40-dollar charge to remove the engraving | 30-Day Returns |
| Resizing | “one complimentary resizing within 60 days regardless of sizing range, or up to 1 year if within sizing range” | 30-Day Returns |
| Cannot be resized | Eternity rings, and “Alternative metals (such as tantalum or titanium)”, each exchangeable for free within 60 days | 30-Day Returns |
| Comparative buying | “comparative purchasing is not allowed”, and a suspected order “may be blocked from shipping or returning” | 30-Day Returns |
| Warranty | “a free lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects”; excludes “wear and tear, loss of gemstones, product loss, or theft” | Shopping With Us, archived June 2026 |
| Outside work | “Repair or service performed by a jeweler other than Brilliant Earth will void the warranty.” | Shopping With Us, archived June 2026 |
| Upgrades | Credit for the original price toward a natural diamond “of at least 1.5x greater value”, or a lab diamond “of at least 2x” | Shopping With Us, archived June 2026 |

The Clock Starts Before the Box Arrives
Brilliant Earth counts its 30 days, and its 60-day and one-year resizing periods, from when the order is available for shipment or pickup, not from delivery. One of its recent one-star reviewers ran into exactly this, writing that the exchange period counts down “from the date it is delivered to the store rather than the date it is picked up”. If you order for a proposal, note the date it becomes available and plan the decision from there.
Free Resizing, Then No Return
The resizing terms are generous on paper: one free resize within 60 days whatever the size change, and up to a year within the ring’s sizing range, with shipping paid both ways. But the returns page lists “Rings that have been resized or modified” as not eligible for return. Rare Carat and With Clarity write the same rule, as our Rare Carat review and our comparison of where to buy engagement rings show. Decide on the ring first, then size it. Titanium and tantalum bands cannot be resized at all, so order those in the right size; our guide to ring resizing cost explains why.
The Warranty Covers Making, Not Losing
The warranty in the archived copy replaces “any damaged fine jewelry within 60 days of purchase” and, after that, fine jewelry “under $1,000 in value”. It excludes wear, theft and loss, and gives as examples of what is not a defect “Prongs catching, wearing out, or bending over time” and “The loss of a gemstone caused by damage from everyday wear”. Brilliant Earth sells Extend protection plans for accidental damage and recommends separate insurance for loss and theft. That split explains much of its complaint record, below, and it is why engagement ring insurance is worth pricing alongside the ring.
What It Costs

Brilliant Earth publishes a price for each metal, and the difference is large. On 18 September 2026 its 2mm Comfort Fit wedding band was listed at 590 dollars in 18K yellow gold, with the metal menu showing 200 dollars less for 14K and 100 dollars more for platinum. Its pages give no reason for its prices, and we cannot say whether they are lower or higher than a comparable ring elsewhere without matching the grades one by one. What the pages do show is where the extras sit: engraving costs 40 dollars, and so does removing it on a return.
For the diamond itself, the useful comparison is by grade and size, which our diamond ring price by carat guide sets out, and for lab-grown stones our comparison of the best place to buy lab-grown diamonds puts Brilliant Earth beside five other sellers on the same terms.
What Customers Say, Counted
We opened Brilliant Earth’s Trustpilot page on 18 September 2026 and counted.
| Trustpilot, read 18/09/2026 | Brilliant Earth |
|---|---|
| TrustScore shown | 4.0, “Great” |
| Total reviews | 1,527 |
| Reviews in the last 12 months | 241 |
| Five stars / one star | 67% / 19% |
| Four, three and two stars | 6%, 4% and 4% |
| Replies to negative reviews | “Replied to 97% of negative reviews” |
| Rank in its Trustpilot category | 128 of 161 in Jewelry Store |
Almost a fifth of all reviews at one star is a real signal, so we read the 20 most recent one-star reviews, published between 6 May and 18 September 2026, and grouped them by what went wrong. The grouping is ours.
| What the one-star review was about | Reviews, of 20 |
|---|---|
| A stone lost or a piece breaking after normal wear | 6 |
| Late, lost or misdelivered shipments | 4 |
| Repairs and resizes: delays or damage | 3 |
| Refunds and policy: slow refund, exchange clock, no flexibility | 3 |
| Service in a showroom | 2 |
| Wrong or damaged item on arrival | 2 |
The biggest group lines up with the warranty’s biggest exclusion. Reviewers describe an infinity ring that lost four diamonds in three years, bracelets that broke within months, and a gem that came loose before a wedding, and in several the repair was refused or charged for. On Brilliant Earth’s own terms, lost stones and wear are not manufacturing defects. That does not make every complaint wrong or every reply right; it tells you which risk to insure.
The positive reviews are mostly about people: named showroom and chat consultants who guided a custom design, which fits a company whose model runs through its showrooms. We could not open the Better Business Bureau’s profile pages on 18 September 2026, because the site answered with a browser check, and Reddit threads opened only to a login wall, so we report neither.
The Legal Record

Searches for Brilliant Earth often ask about a lawsuit or a controversy. The only legal proceeding named in its 2025 annual report and its report for the second quarter of 2026 is a representative action filed on 5 December 2022 by a former employee, Veronica Cusimano, under California’s Private Attorneys General Act, over wages, overtime, meal and rest breaks and similar labor claims. The company’s appeal to force arbitration was rejected in February 2025. Its August 2026 quarterly report says the parties signed a settlement in March 2026, which a court preliminarily approved on 28 July 2026, with a final hearing set for 2 December 2026.
That is a workplace dispute, not a customer one, and the filings say the company does not expect it to have a material effect. We found no other proceeding in those filings. If a different controversy is what you have in mind, we could not identify it from the sources we read.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Brilliant Earth a Trustworthy Company?
It is a real, established retailer: a public company that files with the SEC, founded in 2005, with 42 showrooms at the end of 2025 and written returns and warranty terms. Its service record is mixed, with 19% of Trustpilot reviews at one star, so buy with the warranty’s exclusions in mind.
Why Is Brilliant Earth So Cheap?
We did not find Brilliant Earth claiming to be cheap, and its pages give no reason for its prices. Its annual report says its showrooms “do not stock significant amounts of inventory”, but we cannot say whether that lowers prices. Compare the same grades and metal at another store before deciding it is a bargain.
Does Brilliant Earth Jewelry Tarnish?
Its warranty treats discoloration from “chemicals, make-up, immersion in pools and hot tubs, or bathing” as normal wear, not a defect, and its Extend plans list rhodium plating among their services, which is the coating white gold loses over time. Our white gold vs yellow gold guide explains that plating.
Are Brilliant Earth Diamonds Real or Lab Grown?
Both, depending on the listing: Brilliant Earth sells natural diamonds, which its upgrade program credits toward a larger natural stone, and a separate lab-grown range. Either is a real diamond under the FTC’s Jewelry Guides, whose definition of a diamond in 16 CFR 23.12 says nothing about where it grew; a lab-grown stone must simply be disclosed as such. Check which one each listing names.
What Was the Controversy Surrounding Brilliant Earth?
The only legal matter in its latest SEC filings is a 2022 wage claim by a former employee in California, settled in 2026 subject to a final court hearing set for December. It concerns labor law, not customers. We found no other proceeding in those filings and cannot confirm any other controversy.
Is Brilliant Earth a High-End Brand?
That depends on what you compare it with, so here is a fixed point: its 2mm Comfort Fit band was 590 dollars in 18K gold on 18 September 2026. It presents itself as “a global leader in fine jewelry” and sells through showrooms and custom design, the way traditional jewelers do, rather than as a discount site.
