Platinum engagement rings cost less extra than most people expect. On the five settings below, each priced as a complete ring with the same 1.01 carat round lab diamond on 6 November 2026, platinum added $200 to $370 over 14K white gold, and on two of the five it was cheaper than 18K white gold. The complete platinum rings ran from $1,520 to $2,105. Our overall pick is the Summer Solitaire, a cathedral setting with a gallery basket and the lowest platinum price of the five.

Key Takeaways
- Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, the word platinum on its own means at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum; between 850 and 949 parts may be marked only with the number attached (16 CFR 23.6).
- GIA writes that platinum does not tarnish and keeps its natural white color, and its 2025 metals guide lists platinum as resizable but expensive to resize.
- On these five rings, platinum cost $200 to $370 more than 14K white gold as a complete ring, read on 6 November 2026.
- Platinum was cheaper than 18K white gold on the Summer and the Aarya, the same price on the Angie, and dearer on the Francie and the Rita.
- GIA adds that some makers rhodium plate platinum, and a plated platinum ring then needs re-plating from time to time, just like white gold.

How We Chose
- Priced in platinum, compared with gold. Every pick was read in platinum and in 14K and 18K white gold on the same day, so the premium you see is real for that ring, not an average.
- One diamond across the board. A 1.01 carat round lab diamond, H color, VS1 clarity, on all five, so the stone does not hide the metal cost.
- Settings where platinum earns its keep. Four solitaires and one pavé ring, because a plain setting shows the metal most and a pavé setting is where a white metal behind white stones matters.
- No repeats. None of these settings appears on our other engagement ring pages.
- Jewelers from our approved list. All five are from Rare Carat, which is also the jeweler that pays us. Other stores sell platinum engagement rings; they are not ranked lower, they are simply not on this page.
- Nothing bought or handled. Every detail comes from the product page as read on 6 November 2026 on Rare Carat’s U.S. site.
What Platinum Means on a Ring
“Platinum” is one of the few words on a jewelry tag with a federal definition behind it, and the definition is the first thing to check.
The 950 Standard
The FTC’s Jewelry Guides (16 CFR 23.6) say the word platinum, used without qualification, describes a product made throughout of at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum. A piece with 850 to 949 parts per thousand may be described only with the number next to the word, for example “900 Platinum.” Below 850 parts per thousand, the word platinum is not supposed to be used on its own at all. If a listing says only “platinum,” you should be getting 950. If it gives a number, read the number.
Naturally White, With One Exception
GIA’s 2013 article on platinum says the metal doesn’t tarnish and keeps its natural white color, and GIA’s 2025 guide to everyday ring metals says platinum has a bright white finish without having to be plated. The exception is in the same GIA guide: some makers rhodium plate platinum to boost shine and scratch resistance, and a ring that has been plated will need re-plating from time to time, just as white gold does. Ask the jeweler whether a platinum ring is plated before you buy, because it changes the upkeep. For how platinum and white gold age side by side, our page on platinum vs white gold covers patina, density and plating in detail.
Gentle on Sensitive Skin
GIA’s 2025 metals guide says platinum’s high purity, usually around 95%, reduces the risk of skin reactions, and its earlier white metals article calls palladium and platinum hypoallergenic. The American Academy of Dermatology lists platinum among the metals it recommends for people with a nickel allergy. If nickel is a known problem, platinum removes one of the questions that white gold raises, since GIA notes white gold can be alloyed with nickel. Our list of hypoallergenic engagement rings covers the other options.
What Platinum Really Costs on These Rings
The common belief is that platinum is a big step up from gold. On these five rings, it was not. The table shows the complete price of each ring with the same 1.01 carat lab diamond in three white metals, read on 6 November 2026.
| Ring | 14K white gold | 18K white gold | Platinum | Platinum vs 14K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer Solitaire | 1,320 dollars | 1,580 dollars | 1,520 dollars | 200 dollars more |
| Angie Gallery Solitaire | 1,285 dollars | 1,575 dollars | 1,575 dollars | 290 dollars more |
| Francie Solitaire | 1,590 dollars | 1,865 dollars | 1,900 dollars | 310 dollars more |
| Aarya Trellis Solitaire | 1,715 dollars | 2,125 dollars | 2,000 dollars | 285 dollars more |
| Rita Graduated Pavé | 1,735 dollars | 2,005 dollars | 2,105 dollars | 370 dollars more |
Platinum Against 18K White Gold
If you were choosing between 18K white gold and platinum, the table changes the decision. On the Summer and the Aarya, platinum was cheaper than 18K white gold, and on the Angie it cost the same. Only on the Francie and the Rita did platinum cost more, by $35 to $100. Since platinum is white without plating and 18K white gold usually relies on rhodium, according to GIA, the platinum version is the better buy on most of these rings at this jeweler.
Platinum Against 14K White Gold
Against 14K white gold, platinum costs more on every ring, $200 to $370, with the Summer at the low end and the Rita at the high end. That premium is for the metal alone: the diamond line is the same in both columns. Whether it is worth paying depends on what you value. If you plan to keep the ring white with no plating visits, have sensitive skin, or want the metal to match a platinum wedding band, it is. If the budget is fixed, 14K white gold puts that money toward a better stone.
Where the Premium Hides on Other Pieces
The gap is not always this small. On our vintage engagement rings page, the step from 14K white gold to platinum ran from $180 to $365 on setting prices alone, and on some men’s diamond bands platinum nearly doubles the price. Always compare the metal options on the listing itself.
Choosing a Platinum Setting
The setting decides how much platinum you see and how much work it does. These five cover the main choices.
Cathedral or Low-Set
A cathedral setting raises the stone on arches of metal that rise from the band. The Summer and the Francie are cathedral solitaires; the Summer adds a gallery basket under the stone. The Aarya has a lower-profile cathedral, so the stone sits closer to the finger. Our guide to the cathedral setting explains what the height changes for daily wear.
Slim Band or Standard Width
The Angie’s band is 1.50mm, the thinnest here, and a thin band makes the center stone look larger by comparison. The others sit around 2mm. Brilliant Earth’s 2026 ring width guide says the most popular engagement ring widths are 1.5mm to 2.5mm, so all five sit in the usual range.
Side Stones in Platinum
The Rita is the only pick with side stones: 30 small diamonds graduating down a cathedral band, and a hidden halo under the center. GIA’s 2026 settings guide says pavé settings may need occasional maintenance and can be harder to resize because adjusting the ring may disturb the small stones. That applies in any metal, but with platinum’s higher resizing cost it is worth getting the size right first.
Living With a Platinum Engagement Ring
Platinum asks little of its owner, but it is not maintenance-free.
Resizing
GIA’s 2025 metals guide rates platinum as resizable but expensive to resize, while gold can usually go up to two sizes. Rare Carat includes one free resize in the first year on all five picks, so the first adjustment is covered. After that, budget for it, and use our ring sizer before ordering so the first size is close.
Polishing and Patina
GIA’s 2025 guide notes that platinum may need polishing to remove patina. Patina is the soft, matte look the surface takes on with wear. Some owners like it and leave it; others have the ring polished back to a bright finish at a jeweler. Neither harms the ring.
Matching the Wedding Band
If the engagement ring is platinum, a platinum wedding band wears against it evenly. A softer gold band next to platinum can wear faster where the two rub. For bands made to sit beside a solitaire like these, see wedding bands for a round solitaire.
Which Platinum Engagement Ring Fits You?
| If you want | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum for the least money | Summer Solitaire | The lowest complete platinum price, and cheaper than its own 18K version |
| The stone to look as big as possible | Angie Gallery Solitaire | The slimmest band here at 1.50mm |
| A polished cathedral classic | Francie Solitaire | Cathedral sides, about 2mm wide, made in the USA |
| A low-set ring with side detail | Aarya Trellis Solitaire | Low cathedral and crisscrossed prongs, cheaper than 18K |
| Diamonds down the band | Rita Graduated Pavé | 30 side stones and a hidden halo |
Frequently Asked Questions
What Are the Downsides of Wearing Platinum Rings?
The main ones are cost and upkeep of a different kind. GIA lists platinum as expensive to resize and notes it may need polishing to remove patina, the matte surface it develops with wear. Platinum is also heavy on the hand. On the rings on this page, though, the price gap over 14K gold was smaller than many buyers assume.
Does Platinum Turn Yellow Like White Gold?
No. GIA says platinum keeps its natural white color and does not need plating to look white, while white gold is usually rhodium plated and can show its yellow tone as the plating wears. The one caveat is a platinum ring that was rhodium plated by its maker: the plating can wear, but the metal underneath is still white.
Are Engagement Rings Gold or Platinum?
Both are common, and gold is offered on every ring here. Gold is the cheaper choice in 14K, and comes in yellow, white and rose. Platinum is the white metal that stays white without plating. On these five rings, 18K white gold often cost as much as platinum, so the real choice is usually between 14K gold and platinum.
What Is the Difference Between White Gold and Platinum?
White gold is gold alloyed with whiter metals such as nickel or palladium, and usually plated with rhodium, according to GIA. Platinum is a separate metal, at least 95% pure when sold under the plain word platinum in the U.S. Platinum is heavier, white without plating and hypoallergenic, while white gold costs less and is easier to resize.
Is Platinum Worth It for an Engagement Ring?
It is worth it if you want a white ring with no plating visits, have a nickel allergy, or plan to match a platinum band. On the five rings here, platinum cost $200 to $370 more than 14K white gold for the complete ring. If the budget is tight, that sum can go toward the diamond instead.
