Ruby engagement rings come in two kinds: a ruby as the center stone, or a diamond center with rubies set around it. The five picks below are the second kind, complete rings that pair a 1.01 carat round lab-grown diamond (H color, VS1 clarity) with rubies beside it, under it, along the band or in a halo. On 6 November 2026 they ran from $1,255 to $2,305 in 14K white gold, and our overall pick is the Solo Ruby Accent Solitaire, a classic solitaire with one ruby on each side. Further down we cover what to ask before you buy a ring with a ruby in the center.

How We Chose

Why a Ruby

Hard Enough for Every Day

An engagement ring is knocked and brushed constantly. GIA gives ruby a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, the same as sapphire, which GIA’s guide to diamond alternatives calls “well-suited for everyday wear.” Only diamond and moissanite rank harder among the stones usually set in engagement rings. That puts ruby in a different league from softer gems such as emerald, which GIA places at 7.5 to 8.

Ruby and Sapphire Are the Same Mineral

GIA’s encyclopedia says ruby is a variety of corundum, the same species as sapphire, and that chromium is what turns it red. Corundum in any other color is sold as sapphire. If you like the idea of a colored stone but are not set on red, our page of sapphire engagement rings covers blue and fancy colors.

What It Stands For

GIA names ruby as the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. Those are the only meanings we found in a source we would cite. Many sellers attach ruby to passion and love, which is a cultural association rather than a documented tradition.

Ruby Accents vs a Ruby Center

Accents: The Ruby as Color

The five picks here keep a diamond in the middle and use ruby for color. That has two practical advantages. The diamond does the heavy work of sparkle, and small accent stones cost far less than a large ruby. The trade-off is information: none of the five listings states the rubies’ weight, origin or treatment, which is common for small accents but worth asking about.

A Ruby Center: Ask Three Questions

A ruby in the center is the bigger purchase and needs more questions. Rare Carat’s Solo setting page lists ruby among its center stone options, and the jeweler sells loose rubies. On a loose 1.12 carat round ruby we read on 6 November 2026, the page said “natural, earth-mined” and “heated,” and gave the cut as a cabochon, which is a smooth dome rather than faceted. Whatever the seller, ask:

  1. Natural or lab-created? The FTC requires a lab-grown ruby to be called “laboratory-created” or similar, right before the word ruby, in equally conspicuous type.
  2. Treated, and how? The loose ruby we read disclosed heating. Ask whether any treatment was used, which one, and get the answer in writing.
  3. Faceted or cabochon? A cabochon has a glow but no sparkle. For an engagement ring most people want a faceted stone.

Where the Rubies Sit, and What It Changes

Beside the Center

The Solo sets one ruby on each side of the diamond, which gives a three-stone look in two colors. It is the lowest price here and the most traditional shape.

Along the Band

The Spectra sets rubies around the band into a gallery basket. You see red from every angle, not just the top. Stones set down a band behave like pavé, which GIA’s 2026 guide to settings says can make a ring harder to resize.

Under the Center

The Colore puts a ring of rubies under the diamond, a hidden halo that shows only from the side. From above, the ring reads as a diamond solitaire.

Around the Center

The Bellora Ruby Cathedral Halo frames the diamond with a ruby halo and adds ruby accents along the profile, with 68 diamonds on a pavé cathedral band. It is the most color and the most stones on this page. For diamond-only halos, see our halo engagement rings.

As One Vintage Detail

The Carmel is a vintage-inspired pavé ring with milgrain, where Rare Carat says a single “rich ruby accent” adds color. The listing does not say where the ruby sits. For more antique-style settings, see our vintage engagement rings.

Metals for a Ruby Engagement Ring

All five settings are offered in 14K and 18K gold and in platinum. The table shows the complete price with the same 1.01 carat diamond, read on 6 November 2026.

Ring14K white gold, complete18K white gold, completePlatinum, complete
Solo Ruby Accent1,255 dollars1,520 dollars1,795 dollars
Spectra Ruby1,380 dollars1,660 dollars1,610 dollars
Colore Ruby Hidden Halo1,565 dollars1,845 dollars2,215 dollars
Carmel Vintage Ruby1,785 dollars2,140 dollars1,860 dollars
Bellora Ruby Cathedral Halo2,305 dollars2,610 dollars2,860 dollars

On the Spectra and the Carmel, platinum cost less than 18K white gold. The Solo’s 18K and platinum figures are its setting prices plus the same 375 dollar diamond. Whether red looks best against white, yellow or rose metal is a matter of taste, and every pick is offered in all three gold colors.

Caring for a Ruby Ring

Cleaning

GIA’s 2015 article on ultrasonic cleaners says star ruby and star sapphire should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic machine. None of the picks here uses a star ruby, but if your rubies’ treatment is unknown, warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are the safe default. Our guide on how to clean an engagement ring has the full routine.

Small Stones, Regular Checks

Every pick carries small accent stones. A look under a lamp every few months, and a jeweler’s check once a year, keeps a missing accent from turning into a repair.

Which Ruby Engagement Ring Fits You?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ruby More Precious Than Diamonds?

Not as a rule. GIA calls ruby the most valuable variety of corundum, the mineral it shares with sapphire, but that ranks it against sapphire, not against diamond. A ruby’s price depends on its color, clarity, size, origin and treatment, so compare individual stones rather than the two gems in general.

What Stones Should Not Be Used for an Engagement Ring?

Soft stones wear badly on a ring worn every day. GIA’s guide to diamond alternatives places emerald and morganite at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, softer than ruby and sapphire at 9. A softer stone can still work in a protective setting, but it needs more care than a ruby.

How Much Is a Real 1 Carat Ruby?

It varies more than diamond prices do. On Rare Carat on 6 November 2026, a natural, heated 1.12 carat round ruby cut as a cabochon was listed at 450 dollars. A cabochon is not what most people set in an engagement ring, so expect a faceted stone of the same weight to be priced differently. Ask for the origin and treatment before comparing prices.

What Does a Ruby Engagement Ring Mean?

GIA names ruby as the July birthstone and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries, which is why some couples choose it for a July birthday or an anniversary. Many sellers also link the red color to love and passion. That is a popular association rather than a recorded tradition.

Are Natural Ruby Engagement Rings Better Than Lab-Created?

Natural and lab-created rubies are the same mineral, but natural stones are rarer and usually cost more. Lab-created rubies must be described as such under the FTC Jewelry Guides. Which is better depends on whether rarity matters to you; either can make a durable ring.
