Three stone engagement rings set a center stone between two smaller side stones, a design GIA says is often taken to stand for the past, the present and the future. The five picks below are complete rings, each priced with the same 1.01 carat round lab-grown diamond (H color, VS1 clarity) in the middle, so what changes is the shape, size and grade of the side stones. On 6 November 2026 they ran from $1,490 to $3,340, from a pair of small princess sides to two half-carat rounds, and our overall pick is the Princesa, the lowest complete price, with side stones graded at the same clarity as the center.

How We Chose

What a Three Stone Ring Means

Past, Present and Future

GIA’s 2026 settings guide notes that the three-stone style is said to symbolize past, present and future. That is the meaning most jewelers repeat, and it is why three-stone rings are also given for anniversaries. You will also see the name trilogy ring, which describes the same design.

A Ring for an Anniversary Too

Because the meaning looks back as well as forward, three-stone rings are not only engagement rings. If you are buying for an anniversary rather than a proposal, the same settings work, and the past, present and future reading fits a couple who already share a past. The practical checks on this page stay the same either way.

Or Simply a Bigger Look

The less romantic reason is size. Two side stones spread the sparkle across more of the finger, so a 1 carat center reads as a larger ring. On the Tre, the two side stones add a full carat, which puts about two carats of diamond on the hand.

Choosing the Side Stones

Shape

Side stone shapePickWhat it does
Princess, set diagonallyPrincesaCrisp, geometric frame; corners are exposed points
Pear, pointing inwardKelseySofter outline that leads the eye to the center
Round, 0.50 ct eachTreClassic look, much more diamond
Round, 0.33 ct each, thick bandEleanorTraditional proportions on a heavy 2.3mm band
Round, U-prong, with split pavéBethThree-stone plus pavé down the band

GIA’s Al Gilbertson wrote in 2016 that shapes with points or sharp corners are more exposed to chipping at those points. Princess and pear side stones both have points; round sides do not.

Size

A small pair makes the center look bigger by contrast. A large pair makes the whole ring bigger but the center relatively smaller. The Kelsey’s 0.15 carat pair and the Tre’s 1.00 carat pair sit at the two ends of that choice, and GIA’s guidance on matching color applies to both.

Color and Clarity

GIA’s guide says side stones in an all-diamond three-stone ring “should typically be within about two color grades of the center.” All five picks list their side stones at G or G-H against an H center, inside that range. Clarity varies more: the Princesa and the Tre list their sides at VS1, the same as the center, while the Kelsey, Eleanor and Beth list SI1. For what each grade means, see our diamond color and clarity chart.

Changing the Center Stone

Other Shapes in the Middle

Every pick here was priced with a round center so they compare fairly, but none of them is limited to a round. Rare Carat lists the Tre as able to take a round, cushion, oval, princess, emerald, radiant, pear, Asscher or marquise center. The Princesa takes round, cushion, oval, princess, emerald, radiant and Asscher. The Eleanor’s page says it “can be set with any diamond shape.” An elongated center such as an oval or emerald, between round sides, stretches the whole ring along the finger.

Matching Shape and Sides

Mixing shapes changes the look more than it changes the price. Princess sides beside a round center, as on the Princesa, give a crisp contrast. Pear sides, as on the Kelsey, curve toward the center and soften it. Round sides, as on the Tre and the Eleanor, are the most traditional pairing with any center. If you choose an emerald or another step-cut center, remember GIA’s advice that step cuts show inclusions and color more easily, and that the side stones should stay within about two color grades of it.

Lab-Grown or Natural

The Tre’s page lists its side stones as lab diamonds, and every center here was priced as lab-grown. You can usually choose a natural center instead; ask whether the side stones are natural or lab-grown too, so the three stones match in kind as well as in color. Our comparison of lab-grown vs natural diamonds covers the trade-offs.

Three Stone Engagement Ring Price

Where the Money Goes

With the center fixed at 375 dollars, the setting and its side stones are most of every price here. The setting line runs $1,115 to $2,965, from the Princesa to the Beth. The Tre’s 1,535 dollar setting carries a full carat of side diamonds, which is the most diamond per dollar of the five.

Metal

Eleanor3,000 dollars3,325 dollars3,270 dollars
Beth Split Pavé3,320 dollars3,515 dollars3,910 dollars

14K prices are for white gold. On the Eleanor, platinum cost less than 18K white gold. For the trade-offs between white metals, see platinum vs white gold.

Wearing a Three Stone Ring

Hands and Fingers

GIA’s 2017 guide to ring styles says a three-stone ring “works well, no matter what the size of the hand or finger is,” and Brilliant Earth’s 2026 hand-type guide recommends three-stone styles for slim fingers. If you are unsure, our pages on rings for small fingers and long fingers go further.

Pairing a Wedding Band

A three-stone ring is wider across the top than a solitaire, so a straight band can leave a gap. A thin band, or a curved one, sits closer. Our list of curved wedding bands covers that option.

Care

A three-stone ring has three sets of prongs instead of one. Check them every few months, and have a jeweler look at the ring once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Do 3 Stone Engagement Rings Mean?

A three stone engagement ring is most often said to stand for the past, the present and the future of a relationship, a meaning GIA repeats in its 2026 settings guide. It is a popular symbol rather than a rule, and many people choose the style simply because it adds sparkle and width.

What Does a 5 Stone Engagement Ring Mean?

A five stone ring has no single agreed meaning the way a three stone ring does. It is usually chosen for its look: a row of five diamonds gives more width and sparkle across the finger than three. If a ring’s meaning matters to you, the three stone design is the one with a story attached.

Is a Three Stone Ring the Same as a Trilogy Ring?

Yes. Trilogy ring is another name for the same design, a center stone between two side stones. Whichever name a store uses, judge each ring by the stone sizes and grades it lists, not by the label.

Can You Wear a Wedding Band With a Three Stone Engagement Ring?

Yes. The wider top of a three stone ring can leave a gap beside a straight band, so many people choose a thin or curved band that sits closer. Bring the engagement ring when you try bands, or ask the jeweler whether a matching band is offered.

Should the Side Stones Match the Center?

In color, they should be close. GIA advises that side stones in an all-diamond three-stone ring be within about two color grades of the center. GIA gives no matching rule for clarity, and on our five picks the side stones were listed either at the center’s VS1 or a step lower at SI1.
