White gold engagement rings are gold alloyed with white metals and, in most cases, coated in rhodium, which is why they look bright white on the day you buy them and need a fresh coat every so often. The five picks below are complete rings in 14K white gold, each priced with the same 1.01 carat round lab-grown diamond (H color, VS1 clarity). On 6 November 2026 they ran from $1,465 to $1,755, and for each one we read the 18K white gold and platinum prices on the same page. Our overall pick is the Signature Hearts & Arrows Pavé, the lowest complete price, with the best-graded accent stones of the five.

How We Chose

What White Gold Actually Is

An Alloy, Then a Plating

Pure gold is yellow. GIA’s 2015 guide says white gold is made by mixing gold with “nickel or palladium, copper and zinc,” which bleaches the color without making it truly white. Most white gold jewelry is then plated with rhodium, a bright white metal, to finish the look. That plating is what you see when the ring is new. Our guide to white gold vs yellow gold explains the alloys in more detail.

Rhodium Wears, and Can Be Renewed

GIA says the rhodium “will wear away gradually over time, requiring the ring to be replated occasionally.” On an engagement ring worn every day, the underside of the band wears first, and a faint warm tone can start to show there. Replating is a routine job at most jewelers. It is the main running cost of white gold, and the reason some buyers move to platinum, which is naturally white.

Nickel and Sensitive Skin

GIA’s guide advises that “people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with this metal.” None of the five Rare Carat listings we read names the white alloy. If you know you react to nickel, ask the jeweler before ordering, or read our list of hypoallergenic engagement rings.

14K vs 18K White Gold

What the Karat Changes

14K gold is 58.3% gold and 18K is 75%, according to Total Materia’s 2009 figures that we cite across our metal guides. More gold means a richer metal, but in white gold it also means a warmer base color under the plating, because there is less white alloy to bleach it. For a ring that will be rhodium plated either way, the visible difference on day one is small.

The step from 14K to 18K was $160 to $290 on these rings, read on 6 November 2026. Our comparison of 14K vs 18K gold covers durability and color in more depth.

White Gold or Platinum?

When Platinum Costs Less

The platinum line is where these pages surprise. On the Bellora Pavé Hidden Halo, platinum cost 1,830 dollars complete against 2,045 dollars in 18K white gold. On the Freya, platinum was 1,670 dollars against 1,645 dollars in 18K, a gap of only 25 dollars. If you were already willing to pay for 18K white gold on either ring, platinum is worth a look, because it is naturally white and does not rely on plating.

What You Trade

GIA’s 2015 guide calls platinum “denser and stronger than gold,” and “far rarer than gold.” In practice, white gold is lighter on the finger and needs replating, while platinum is heavier and stays white. For the full comparison, see platinum vs white gold.

Choosing a Diamond for White Gold

Color Against a White Metal

In a white gold ring there is no yellow metal around the stone, so the color you see is the diamond’s own. The H color used on every pick here sits in GIA’s near colorless range (G to J), which GIA’s 2015 color chart article describes as one of five groups on its D-to-Z scale. Our diamond color and clarity chart explains where each grade sits and when moving up is worth it.

The Report

The picks list a “Rare Carat Ideal” cut, which is the jeweler’s own label, not a GIA grade, and the complete-ring pages we read do not name a grading lab. Before you order, ask Rare Carat for the stone’s report so you can check the lab, cut grade and measurements.

Caring for a White Gold Engagement Ring

Cleaning

Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush are enough for most white gold rings. Our guide on how to clean a white gold diamond ring goes step by step, including what to avoid on pavé.

Replating: What to Ask

GIA gives no fixed interval for replating, only that it is needed “occasionally.” How often depends on how hard the ring is worn. When you collect a replated ring, ask three things: whether the prongs and pavé were checked while the ring was in the shop, whether the ring was polished before plating, and whether any stones were removed. A good jeweler checks the setting as part of the job, since the ring has to be cleaned and handled closely anyway. Keep the receipt: if a stone loosens soon after, you will want to know who last worked on the ring.

Pavé Checks

All five rings carry small accent diamonds. GIA’s 2026 guide to settings notes that pavé may need occasional maintenance to keep the stones secure, and that pavé bands can be harder to resize. A quick look under a lamp every few months, and a jeweler’s check once a year, keeps small problems small.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Platinum or White Gold Better for Engagement Rings?

Neither is better for everyone. Platinum is denser and naturally white, so it never needs replating, while white gold is lighter and usually cheaper. On two of the five rings here, though, platinum cost less than or within 25 dollars of 18K white gold, so compare the actual prices before deciding.

Can You Wear a White Gold Engagement Ring With a Yellow Gold Band?

Yes. Mixing metals is a style choice, not a rule, and many people wear a white gold engagement ring with a yellow gold band on purpose. The one practical point is wear: harder and softer metals rubbing together can mark each other, so check both rings at the jeweler from time to time.

Is White Gold Good for an Engagement Ring?

Yes, for most people. It is solid gold, takes every setting style, and costs less than platinum in most configurations. The trade-off is upkeep: GIA says the rhodium plating wears away gradually and the ring needs replating occasionally. People allergic to nickel should ask which alloy is used.

Does 18K White Gold Scratch Easily?

All gold scratches with daily wear, and 18K is softer than 14K because it contains more pure gold. On a rhodium plated ring, light scratches are mostly in the plating and are polished out when the ring is replated. If you work with your hands, 14K is the more practical choice.

Which Is More Classy, White Gold or Yellow Gold?

Neither is classier; it comes down to taste and skin tone. White gold gives an all-white ring that makes a diamond look icy, while yellow gold gives a warmer, more traditional look. Every pick on this page is also offered in yellow gold if you change your mind.
