Platinum vs Palladium Rings: Weight, Hardness, Allergy and Price

By

Verified with 16 sources

Platinum vs palladium is a choice between two naturally white metals from the same family, and for a ring they differ in three ways that matter: weight, how easily a jeweler can work them, and price. Platinum is much denser and cost more per ounce on the day we checked. Palladium is lighter, and its common jewelry alloy is close to platinum’s in hardness. The surprise is at the counter: one online jeweler selling the same plain bands in both metals charged more for palladium than for platinum on September 18, 2026.

This page is about rings, meaning wedding bands and engagement rings, not bullion. If white gold is also on your list, our guide to platinum vs white gold covers that comparison on its own.

Platinum vs Palladium at a Glance

Both metals are white all the way through and need no rhodium plating to look white, which is the point of choosing either one over white gold. The table sets out where they part ways; the sections below explain each row.

The density and melting figures describe the pure element. A ring is an alloy, normally 950 parts per thousand of the named metal, so read those rows as direction and scale.

Weight: The Difference You Feel First

Weight is the gap a buyer notices within seconds, and it is the largest measurable difference between these two metals.

How Much Heavier Platinum Is

The Royal Society of Chemistry lists pure platinum at 21.5 grams per cubic centimeter and pure palladium at 12.0. Divided, that makes platinum about 1.8 times as dense; the division is our own arithmetic. Stewart Grice of the refiner Hoover & Strong, speaking at a 2006 MJSA seminar republished by Ganoksin, gave the same picture for the alloys: around 12 for palladium against 21 for platinum. He named both sides of it. One ounce of palladium “goes much further”, and the lower density is a disadvantage “when a customer wants a very heavy piece”.

Which Weight Suits You

This is a preference, not a verdict. Someone who has never worn a ring usually prefers the lighter band, and someone who wants a wedding band to feel substantial usually prefers platinum. Width moves the answer as much as the metal does, as our guide to men’s wedding band width shows. One caution on listings: Allurez gives the same approximate metal weight, 2.33 grams, for its Diamond Antique Style band in palladium and in platinum. With densities this far apart, one figure cannot describe both rings, so ask for the weight of the exact ring you are ordering.

Hardness: Closer Than the Weight Gap Suggests

On hardness the two metals are near neighbors, and the numbers that matter are for the alloys, not the pure elements.

Vickers Numbers for Real Jewelry Alloys

At the same 2006 seminar, Teresa Fryé of the casting house TechForm said most cast palladium alloys come out at 110 to 120 Vickers, similar to 900 platinum/iridium and “somewhat lower” than cast 950 platinum/ruthenium at about 135. Machined or die-struck palladium can reach around 150 Vickers, she added, but soldering or annealing heat removes that extra hardness. BJ Williams of Johnson Matthey summed it up: pure palladium is slightly softer than platinum, and the alloys on the market are “roughly comparable in hardness”. Ganoksin’s casting article puts unalloyed palladium at about 80 Vickers, which is why it is always alloyed.

What Those Numbers Do Not Tell You

These are trade figures from 2006, not a test of finished rings, and we found no study comparing worn platinum and palladium bands side by side. Mark B. Mann’s bench guide adds one practical point for engagement rings: palladium, like platinum, does not spring back when prongs are bent over a stone, and he writes that its purity makes it “not a candidate for prong failure due to corrosion”. How platinum takes a scratch without losing metal is covered in titanium vs platinum.

Stamps and Hallmarks: What the Marks Mean

The number inside a band is the part of this comparison that the law actually defines, and the two metals are not treated alike.

The US Jewelry Guides

The FTC’s Guides for the Jewelry Industry, read in the eCFR on September 18, 2026, reserve the unqualified word “Platinum” for products composed throughout of 950 parts per thousand pure platinum, allow 850 and 900 only with the number attached (such as “900Pt.”), and list calling anything under 500 parts per thousand platinum as misleading. For palladium, section 23.6 says it is unfair or deceptive to use the word in a way that “misrepresents the product’s true composition”, and it accepts “Pall.” or “Pd.” as quality marks. We could not find a minimum fineness for palladium anywhere in Part 23. In practice, Mann’s bench guide gives “950Pd” as the appropriate mark for a 950 palladium alloy.

The UK Hallmark

In the United Kingdom, the Hallmarking Act 1973 (Application to Palladium) Order 2009, made on July 21, 2009, applied the Act to palladium. It set three standard marks, 500, 950 and 999, added the head of Pallas Athene as the optional palladium symbol, and exempted palladium articles made before January 1, 2010. The same Order ranks the precious metals with platinum first, then gold, then palladium, then silver. A band hallmarked 500 is half palladium by weight, so check which standard you are being sold.

Working the Metal: Resizing, Soldering and Casting

A wedding band will likely need a jeweler at some point, so how each metal behaves at the bench is part of the purchase.

Resizing

Chris Ploof, writing for Ganoksin, says palladium rings can be sized easily by traditional methods, and that laser welding is not recommended because the joints “can be brittle”. Mann’s bench guide describes the usual method: cut the shank at the bottom, add or remove metal, and close the joint with hard palladium solder or 1300 platinum solder. He adds that the metal may turn bluish-purple at soldering heat, a discoloration he says is easily removed. For platinum, Stuller calls its standard 950 platinum/ruthenium alloy “durable, easy to work with”. For what a normal resize costs, see ring resizing costs.

Where Palladium Is Harder for Jewelers

The difficulty sits upstream of your ring. Fryé called casting 950 palladium “the biggest challenge” in making palladium jewelry, because the metal heavily oxidizes between 600°C and 800°C and needs a controlled melt. Palladium also absorbs hydrogen, which is why Larry Fell of David H. Fell & Co. advised staying away from hydrogen when soldering it. Grice called palladium “probably the hardest and most costly metal” his refinery handles. We found no survey of how many US bench jewelers size palladium, so ask a local jeweler before you buy rather than after.

Skin and Allergy: Nickel First, Then Palladium

Both metals are sold as hypoallergenic, and the medical literature is more careful than the sales copy.

Nickel Is the Usual Culprit

Mayo Clinic says nickel allergy “is usually related to earrings and other jewelry”. Its list of metals to look for includes titanium, higher-karat yellow gold, nickel-free white gold and sterling silver; that list does not mention platinum or palladium either way. A 950 alloy of either metal is 95 percent the named metal, and the question to put to a seller is what the remaining 5 percent is. Our hypoallergenic wedding bands guide covers platinum alloys, including the cobalt ones.

What the Palladium Studies Actually Say

Faurschou and colleagues reviewed palladium patch-test data from 1986 to 2008 covering 10,778 patients and found palladium allergy “nearly always seen together with nickel allergy”. The median prevalence was 7.8% in dermatitis patients, but palladium allergy without nickel allergy was 0.2%, and the authors advised limiting palladium in jewelry until more is known. A 2015 European study by Muris and colleagues of 1,651 patients found palladium sensitization almost as prevalent as nickel sensitization when a more sensitive test salt was used. Against that, Tillman and colleagues had 40 women allergic to both metals wear palladium-coated earrings for nine weeks and found a low risk of eczema, while saying palladium in alloys needs more study. These are dermatology patients, not the general public. If you know you react to nickel, a patch test that includes palladium answers the question for you.

Price: The Spot Market vs the Ring on the Counter

This is where most comparisons go wrong, because the metal price and the ring price moved in opposite directions at the jeweler we checked.

The Metal Price on September 18, 2026

Kitco’s spot bid at 5:40 p.m. EDT on September 18, 2026 was $1,796 per troy ounce for platinum and $1,283 for palladium, or 57.74 and 41.25 dollars a gram. Multiply each gram price by its density and a cubic centimeter of pure platinum held about 2.5 times the metal value of the same volume of palladium that day; that multiplication is our own arithmetic.

The Same Band in Both Metals, Same Day

Allurez, an online jeweler that lists many of its bands in both metals, priced them as follows when we opened each page from a US connection on September 18, 2026. Each figure is the sale price Allurez charged; each page also lists a compare-at price about twice as high.

DesignPalladiumPlatinumChecked

Larson Jewelers Thorsten braided inlay on tungsten, 6 mm or 8 mm (inlay only)$229.99 (BALDWYN)$609.99 (PHYTHEON)Sep 18, 2026

The plain domed bands cost roughly twice as much in palladium, while the engraved and diamond-set designs cost less in palladium. Allurez does not explain the pattern on its product pages, and we could not verify the reason. Larson’s pair is a tungsten band with a woven precious metal inlay, so it prices the inlay, not a solid band. The lesson is narrow: compare the two metals in the exact design you want, on the same day, rather than assuming palladium is the cheaper one. For typical band prices across metals, see how much a wedding band costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Palladium More Valuable Than Platinum?

Not on the metal market on September 18, 2026: Kitco’s spot bid was $1,796 an ounce for platinum against $1,283 for palladium. UK hallmarking law also ranks platinum first and palladium below gold. A finished ring can still cost more in palladium, as several Allurez bands did the same day.

What Are the Downsides of Palladium?

It is lighter, which some buyers read as less substantial, and a casting specialist called casting it the biggest challenge, since it oxidizes when hot and absorbs hydrogen. Palladium allergy usually comes with nickel allergy, and in plain bands at one retailer it was not the cheaper metal. We could not find a US palladium fineness threshold.

What Metal Is 30 Times Rarer Than Gold?

Platinum, according to Platinum Guild International, the platinum industry’s promotional body, which calls it “30 times more rare than gold”. It does not show the calculation. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists crustal abundance of 0.0013 ppm for gold and 0.000037 for both platinum and palladium, which by our arithmetic is about 35 times scarcer for each.

Is Palladium Toxic to Touch?

The research we read on palladium jewelry concerns allergy, not poisoning. A 2011 review found palladium allergy nearly always occurs together with nickel allergy, and a 2013 study found a low risk of eczema when palladium-and-nickel-allergic women wore pure palladium-coated earrings for nine weeks. If you react to nickel, ask for a patch test including palladium.

Is It Better to Invest in Palladium or Platinum?

We do not give investment advice, and a ring is a poor proxy for either metal. Retail ring prices did not follow spot on September 18, 2026: platinum cost more per ounce, yet plain palladium bands cost more at one jeweler. Choose the ring metal on weight, workability and the exact price quoted.
